Sharing Printer Instances From Win8 To XP

    Question

  • When sharing printer instances the driver files necessary for the client side are usually copied from the server to the client workstation when making the connection.

The printer driver files (in my particular case, version 3 printer drivers) for Win8 must be built with the Win8 WDK.  Because the driver files built with the Win8 WDK are only compatible back to Vista does that mean that Win8 can not share printer instances to a XP workstation?

If I set the registry entry (on the server side) HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\(PrinterName)\PrinterDriverData\DriverPolicy  to the name of the driver for that printer instance (to keep the server from sending the driver files to the client / use the driver files currently on the client side), install a XP compatible version of the driver on the XP client side, then add the shared instance from the XP client side will the shared printer instance work?

Will it work the other direction (sharing from XP to a Win8 workstation)?

  • From the link

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh852373.aspx V3 printer driver model and Windows 8 printing, it looks like point n print with version 3 print driver is suuported.

  • Yes, version 3 printer drivers are supported on Win8.  Wheter version 3 drivers are supported on Win8 is not the question.

We know several facts about the driver compatability and build environments with recent build environments: (1) Both XP and Win8 may use version 3 printer drivers.  (2) Printer drivers built with the Win8 WDK will not work on XP.  (3) Printer drivers built with the Win7 DDK will not work on Win8, but they will work for XP.

The question is because of facts (2) and (3) is there any way to share printer instances from a Win8 / Server 2012 workstation to a XP workstation client?  The file set deployed on the Win8 / Server 2012 workstation obviously are built on the Win8 WDK.  Therefore when the printer instance is added from the XP workstation the file set built with the Win8 WDK is deployed from the Win8 / Server 2012 workstation to the XP workstation.  The Win8 file set will not work on the XP client side.

It is very possible that it is Microsofts position that sharing between Win8 / Server 2012 and XP *IS NOT* supported.  If sharing between the two operating systems is not supported, then it would be appropriate for our technical support to indicate that fact to our customers.  If the configuration of sharing from Win8 / Server 2012 to XP *IS* supported how can it be done?

(The opposite also holds true - sharing from XP to Win8 - may not be supported.  The same question applies)

    Thanks!

  • OK, thanks, that is what I needed to know.  I will pass the information along to our technical support team.
