Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA Exists on XP?

    Question

  • We have a simple app that detects if UAC is enabled and does a few things. We do this by reading Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA. We assumed that this key doesn't exist on XP, but some of our XP users are reporting that it DOES exist on their machine.

Does anyone have any idea as to why this key would exist on an XP machine?

  • Because it's a group policy setting, the fact that the OS ignores it is irrelevant.

You should note that the Windows Vista guidelines strongly recommend that you do not modify your applications behaviour based on whether or not UAC is enabled.

  • Thanks for the response. Do you know what would add that to XP? It's not there on a clean install.

As for detecting UAC, all we are detecting it for is specifically for elevation and de-elevation purpose. Nothing bad Smile
