The installer was interrupted before Application could be installed...

    שאלה

  • hi ,

I have created a deployment (MSI)package for project (Web setup).

This is working fine in Windows XP. When i run in Windows 2003 server i am getting the following message.

"The installer was interrupted before Application could be installed. You need to restart the installer to try again.

    Click "Close" to exit."

When i double click the MSI File, first screen i am getting is above one.

This was working fine first. I did installation and un installation 4 ,5 times. after that its giving the above message in windows 2003.

I dont know whether Windows Installer corrupted...

MSI package is not wrong bcoz its working in windows XP.

Please give me solution to overcome this issue.

    Thanks

  • You could try installing with logging:

    msiexec /i <path to msi file> /l*vx C:\SomeDirectory\SomeFilename.log

and see if there are any clues in the log. If it doesn't get very far the log won't be too big.

  • The error is "class not registered", so check that have the required IIS, .NET framework etc.

  • I have had this problem, I had solved it like that:

    1. you install IIS (you have probably already done that).

    2. first check if you have installed the latest .NET framework

    3. in command prompt type
    cd C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
    aspnet_regiis -ga UserName
    aspnet_regiis -i
    aspnet_regiis -e

UserName is the user that you are logged on.
I think the user must have admin privileges.

    4. try now to install your web application

    I hope this helps

  • Hello Victor

I'm trying to solve a similar problem using your recipe (getting a webservice to run on a Vista machine).

I have installed IIS (with the IIS6 compatability option)

I have installed .Net Framework v2.0.50727

    But when I write:

    cd C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
    aspnet_regiis -ga UserName

And the username is the (administrator) account I'm logged into I get the respond:

"An error has occurred: 0x8007089a The specified username is invalid"

I do not understand that. It works fine when I try it on a windows XP machine.

Please bear in mind that I'm quite new to Vista, but I run the cmd as Administrator and logged into an Administrator account.

Is there something I'm forgetting or overlooking?

Please share your thoughts on this.

    Thanks in advance.

  • MikeDillerDaller:

You need to run the command prompt with elevated priviledges, for that to work.
Rightclick the prompt shortcut and choose Run as Administrator. It should then show in the prompts titlebar.

Using runas is not enough, it only runs the prompt under another set of credentials but dosn't elevate the priviledges.
It works for administrator access in older windows operating systems, but not in Vista and whatever comes next.

  • Hello

    Thanks for answering.

But I think I have done what you suggest already, if I understand you correctly:

    I wrote:

"Please bear in mind that I'm quite new to Vista, but I run the cmd as Administrator and logged into an Administrator account."

Here's a detalied description of what I did:

Login to Vista as an Administrator with user name "admin"

Making sure that IIS is installed: Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows features on or off -> select IIS

Rightclicking "Command Prompt" and choosing "Run as Administrator".

A command prompt appears with the title: "Administrator: Command Prompt".

    I switch to directory:

    c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\

Here I write the command: aspnet_regiis -lv  <= to check the DotNet2.0 is installed

    Respond:

    "c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll"

Now I write the command:  aspnet_regiis -ga admin

    Respond:

"An error has occurred: 0x8007089a The specified username is invalid."

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

I fixed this by going into Server Manager and adding the Role Services for "IIS 6 Management Compatibility".

  • I had similar problem, setting "The installer was interrupted before [my product name] could be installed".  Running msi from command line with log gave me error, "2769:  Custom Action WEBCA_EvaluateURLsNoFail did not close 2 MSIHANDLEs."  My solution was to install .Net to IIS:
    c:\windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
My problem stemmed from having framework installed before IIS installed.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Hello,

I am trying to solve the save exact problem.
None of my setup msi work on Windows Server 2008 anymore.
I get the famous "The installer was interrupted before .... could be installed."
Then when I look at the MSI debug log thanks to this command line: msiexec /i <path to msi file> /l*vx C:\SomeDirectory\SomeFilename.log
I notice the same errors as you do.

I want to avoid the IIS6 compatibility, I want to make my setups full IIS7 compatible, is there anything I can do at the setup project level or do I need to dig in my source code to find where I call old unsupported functions? It seems a little strange that it is detected as IIS6 so soon.

Thanks for any pointers, this thread is great so far :-)

    >>I've tried the RegIIS solution but no more luck, exact same error message.
    > Another clue is that the Solution Was created under Visual Studio 2005 hence the incompatibility with IIS7, but now I don't know how to rebuild the setup to make it IIS7 proof....

  • I would look at a couple of things:

I don't know if this will work in VS2005 - I am using VS2008 and it solved my problem.  If you are using VS2005, give it a try - can't hurt :)

    1. In VisualStudio select your Setup application and look at the "Target Platform" setting under the Project Properties.  Make sure it is set to x32 if it is to be installed in a 32-bit environment or make sure it's set to x64 if it is to be installed in a 64-bit environment.

    2. Right-click the Setup project and go to "View | Launch Conditions".
    3. Under the "Launch Conditions" folder select "IIS Condition".
    4. Look in the Properties for the "Condition" value
    5. If it is set to IISVERSION >= "#6"
    6. If you want to keep it only installable on IIS7 or above, you should set it to IISVERSION >= "#7"

Note that Windows Server 2008 R2 has an IIS Version of 7.5

  • Thanks for this thread.
Another wonderful example of Microsoft's incredibly useless error messages keeping the Google Search in business !

The tips in this thread also solved my problem, getting around the “The installer was interrupted before Application could be installed” error
message when running my VS2008 Web Deployment .msi file in Windows 7.

Here's what I had to do:

    1.  Make sure IIS is installed & registered (in Windows 7, you need to right-click on the “Command Prompt” start menu item, then “Run as Administrator”)
    and run:
    c:\windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe –i

    2.  Then also go to: Start \ Control Panel \ System and Security \  “Programs” tab \ Turn Windows Features on or off \ Internet Information Services \ Web Management Tools, and tick the four "IIS6 Management Compatibility" checkboxes.

(Apologies for just re-wording what's already been said, but adding some Windows 7 flavour to it !  I'm sure someone'll find it useful.)

  • Yo resolvi este problema, instalando el Framework  1.1, luego su service pack, y finalmente reinstalando el framework 2.0 que ya estaba instalado y luego se instaló normal el programa que me arrojaba este error: "The installer was interrupted before Application could be installed".

  • Folks the solution is very easy

right click visual basic program icon in Programs and choose "Run as an Administrator". Instal your setup project and you will be surprised to see that the installer will finish what it is supposed to do.

  • Here is what has helped me on Windows Server 2008 R2:

    1. Go to Server Manager --> Roles --> Web Server (IIS) --> Role Services

    2. Click Add Role Services and check the following:

       a. Application Development --> CGI

       b. IIS 6 Management Compatibility

    3. Run IISRESET from CMD

    Hope that helps somebody.

  • I was having this same problem running a web install project on a Server 2008 machine.

I fixed this by going into Server Manager and adding the Role Services for "IIS 6 Management Compatibility".

    Awesome, thanks!

I'm targeting IIS7 and .Net 4 and figured I no longer needed it.  The installer still needs it aparently as a manual creation of the site works perfectly.

    Thanks, this works for me.

  • Hi,

I was facing same problem "The installer interrupted". After lot of efforts, I am able to resolve this issue with some weired and illogical reason for this issue. Setup content file included folder with name "filters" which caused this issue. When I renamed this folder name with "filter", it installed successfully.
