Multiple package failures on load of IDE

    Question

  • I have encountered a problem with visual studio ultimate 2010 that I have been unsuccessful in fixing.  It started with the error that teh visual studio component model host package failed to load.

    I have attempted a repair of VS.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled (multiple times).  I have tried applying SP 1.  None of these have helped.

    There are other packages that fail to load as well (vsdebugpresentationpackage, microsoft.visualstudioeditor.implementation.editorpackage).

    These are the errors in the Activity Log:

  • Hi dmcduck,

    Thanks for your post.

    According to the Visual Studio logs, it appears that VS IDE failed to load some components/packages. Would you please send the entire VS Activity log file to me for further analyze? (E-mail: v-anwu_at_microsoft_dot_com) Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

    Based on my experience, this issue can have several causes: corrupted user profile, third-party add-ins, corrupted Visual Studio packages... You can perfrom the methods below to troubleshoot this issue:

    • Please check if the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.ComponentModelHost.Implementation.dll" exists/correct in your system. This dll is for the [Visual Studio Component Model Host Package];
    • Run devenv /Resetsettings to eliminate the cause of corrupted settings;
    • Run devenv /Safemode to eliminate the possibility that third party Add-ins or packages are causing problems;
    • Reboot the machine in Safe Mode. This can isolate some third party application/driver's interference;
    • Switch and try a new user account. This can rule out the possibility of corrupted user profile

    If the above methods still could not resolve this issue, would you please try to uninstall-reinstall Visual Studio again? I recommand you using this Uninstall Utility with switch VS2010_Uninstall-RTM.ENU.exe /full /netfx to make sure VS completely removed. If you have VS 2010 SP1 installed, please remove VS with the following order: Visual Studio 2010 SP1 >> Visual Studio updates >> Visual Studio 2010.

    I'm waiting to hear from you  about  the status of this issue.

    Sincerely,

  • Andrew,

    Thank you for your response.

    1.  File is there; it is also in the GAC.

    2.  Nope, didn't work.

    3.  No joy here, either.

    4.  Skipped this in favor of #5, cuz it was faster

    5.  REALLY???  I lost half my hair over a corrupt user profile?!?!?!  <backs up files, deletes profile, etc., etc.>

    Thank you!

  • See registry setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\Packages

    Keep an exported backup of the Package hierarchy.

    Search for the failed packages by name and delete the appropriate key.

    I had this similar problem when uninstalling packages. Telerik products is one culprit.

  • vs2010 woks fine when run in safe mode using command prompt as you mentioned.

    Run devenv /Safemode to eliminate the possibility that third party Add-ins or packages are causing problems

    please tell me how to correct it so that it could work in normal condition as well.
