.Net updates failed KB2572073, KB2656352, KB2657424 & KB951847 on MS Server 2003 R2 x64

    Question

  • I have an MS Server 2003 R2 x64 and found that installation of four .Net updates have failed  KB2572073, KB2656352, KB2657424 & KB951847.  I tried to re-install each one individually from MS update site, but they failed again.  I have run the .Net cleanup tool and successfully removed all versions apart from .Net 3.5, even though it said it was successfully removed.  I have now found that when I use the Server CD to install the original .Net, it goes through the motions but does not install.  Please help

  • Hi Dave G,

From your error logs, you failed on .NET Framework 2.0 installation.

In fact, Windows Server 2003 R2 includes the MSI-based .NET Framework 2.0. It appears in Add/Remove Windows Components as an OS component, but selecting it simply invokes the MSI-based installer.  The MSI can be repaired and removed using Add/Remove Programs regardless of whether it is installed via the standalone MSI or via the Add/Remove Windows Components UI.

So please first make sure you have turned .NET Framework 2.0 feature on, and then tell us if you can verify .NET Framework 2.0. You can only install .NET Framework 3.5 after 2.0 features have been successfully opened.

Additionally, if you are using a domain account, please check that you have added your local Admin group to your domain account.

  • Please use this tool to verify what .NET Frameworks are currently on your system:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

Post the first 15 lines of tool output here:

You say you successfully removed all .NET Frameworks except 3.5? As 3.5 is an extension of 2.0, it is not possible to have 3.5 unless 2.0 and 3.0 are also present.

What .NET Framework version does the "Server CD" attempt to install?

.Net Framework version on the server CD: is .Net Framework 2.0

  • That's pretty clear :-)

You have no .NET Frameworks installed.

That being the case, please try this standalone cumulative installer for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. It includes .NET Framework 2.0. 3.0 and all service packs through 3.5 SP1:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe

Before you run the installer from an account with full administrative privileges, clear out the %temp% directory for that account and disable any AV software.

If the install fails, collect complete install logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs with this:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E0DA314F-6216-4A18-BC6B-7D29CF83AF20&displaylang=e&displaylang=en

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here.

  • Hi,

I have attempted to install the cumulative installer for .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, but the installation failed.

Here is the link to vslogs.cab:

  • I'm sorry, but I am unable to find any .NET Framework install logs in your vslogs.cab.

Is it possible the failure occurred immediately, before actual installation started? If so, was any error message displayed?

  • Hi Dave G,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.
I have found your logs in a deep directory. Then I found that your installation of .NET Framework seems failed. You error is
Internal Exception during install operation: 0xc0000005 at 0x000006427EE83C3F.
It indicates that you have some permission problem when installing .NET Framework 2.0.
Then I read your Msiinv logs, it seems that not all products of .NET Framework have been uninstalled.
So please use these tools to completely uninstalled .NET Framework 2.0 SP, .NET Framework 3.5, .NET Framework 3.0 SP (Since 3.5 are based on both 2.0 and 3.0, so you should remove all of them from your OS)
1.Use msiinv to gather information about what is installed on a computer:
          http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/07/01/using-msiinv-to-gather-information-about-what-is-installed-on-a-computer.aspx
You can refer to this page and try the steps listed there.

2.After using msiinv tool, you can get a product key of the .NET Framework. Then please refer to this page:
          http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/10/30/487096.aspx
(download the smartmsizap tool from here:
          https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=27e6a35d1a492af7&id=27E6A35D1A492AF7%21417 )
After that, please first make sure you have full permission to install products and then try to install .NET Framework 3.5.

    Best regards,

  • When I try to install .Net 3.5 SP1 it fails with a "Setup error" message which says

"An error occurred during setup.  Installed files have been removed from your computer.......etc"

This generates an error log "dd_dotnetfx35error.txt"  and you can see the file here:-

    https://skydrive.live.com/?mkt=en-gb&ppud=4#cid=AF97C36FDAC78356&id=AF97C36FDAC78356%21103

I don't understand why there is a permission problem because I am using the Domain Admins account.

I will run msiinv and post the results here

  • Hi Dave, just out of curiosity, could you please download the .NET framework cleanup tool from this link and run it?

Are there any items being listed in the drop down box next to "Product to cleanup"?

    Wednesday, March 07, 2012 6:26 PM
  • Msiinv did not find any .Net products installed.

    See the msiinv_output.txt here https://skydrive.live.com/?mkt=en-gb&ppud=4#cid=AF97C36FDAC78356&id=AF97C36FDAC78356%21103

I have run the .Net Framework cleanup tool as above.  It lists all versions, but you can see the output "cleanup_main.log" says none installed
