TFS Web service documentation

    Question

  • All the comments I've seen about documentation for the web services encourage you to use the object model. However, I'm working a GUI for a non windows platform and am unable to use the object model.

So is there any published documentation on how to use the web services?

  • Wayne,

I'm not aware of any formal documentation for the Team Foundation Server web service API (as there is for the TFS Object Model).

However, since the TFS Object Model communicates with TFS via the web service API (behind the scenes) you can utilize a utility like Fiddler to see how the object model calls web services in different scenarios.  This would allow you to write a bit of code using the object model and then use Fiddler to determine how to do the same thing using the web service APIs.  This is not a perfect solution but it should help out in cases where you're not sure what's going on behind the scenes.

    Hope this helps.

  • Web services are standard interfaces. .NET is not standard and not cross-platform.

The TFS team is forcing developers to use .NET (a non-standard approach) because they cannot document the TFS web services?

This is unreasonable and not at all in keeping with advancing TFS as a readily available tool for all platforms!

This approach must change. Web services to TFS for all!

  • Genifycom,

TFS API has an ecosystem of resources around it, please refer to the documentation on msdn http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb130146.aspx. If you were interested in the documentation for services please refer to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb286958.aspx#services. The API is available in bothe VB.NET and C#.NET.
