  • I cannot get much clues from the log snippet above, can you please follow What to do when you go to post a setup and deployment issue on the MSDN forums?
    http://blogs.msdn.com/aaronru/archive/2007/12/10/what-to-do-when-you-go-to-post-a-setup-and-deployment-issue-on-the-msdn-forums.aspx for more information.

Otherwise, the following aricle may help:

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

  • HI,

Sorry to piggy back here, but i have the same problem.  I have treid most every "solution" I have founf online but same problem.  I get a failure whether I am trying to load VS 2008 (errors at .Net 3.5) or simply trying to load .Net 3.0.  I have used the log collection tool from Aaron Stebners site, so I have a cab file, just need to know where to send it.

    Thanks a lot in advance,
    BB

  • Hi king88
Please use the collect tool to include the installation logs at %temp%.
    The instruction is here: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
And it seems that disk D is your System disk? What about disk C? Does the local account has full access permission to it?

    Thanks.

    Hi Bernie

Does disk E refer to a local disk drive, network drive or a disc drive?
    Please verify the source.

    And for both:
Make sure you have the administrative privilege locally and enough disk space , and run the setup from local disk instead of installing from network.

  • Please try installing from local source rather than disc drive in order to eliminate potential hardware and media causes.

  • OK,

But, as background.  I have also tried to download and install .net 3.0 from local drive and that also fails.
    Thanks,

  • Hi Bernie,

It looks to me like this is the problem in your dd_wcf_retCA logfiles:

ServiceModelReg [09:32:32:205]: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load
    file or assembly 'System.ServiceModel, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The module was
expected to contain an assembly manifest.

I'm not entirely sure why you'd run into this though.  It might be that the download was corrupt or that there's some corruption in an existing version of .Net.  Some users have luck with repairing .Net Framework 2.0 (you can do this from Add/Remove Programs) if they're using XP.

Also, there are lots of additional error messages noting that you can't write to your EventLog, probably because it's run out of space.  (If you run eventvwr, you can clear the Application Event Log and then you won't get these additional errors and you might start to see additional useful information in the Event Log.)

    Hope this helps,

  • OK,

Just uninstalled and reinstalled every version of the framework.  Everything went smooth up unitl 3.0, where it bailed with the same error.  I have cleared the event log.  Not sure what to do next.
    Thanks,
    Bernie

  • OK,

I think I am giving up.  I have tried solutions from folks with the exact same error, and still no luck.  Not sure why I keep getting teh BadImageFormatException error time after time.  I feel like I have tried everything, shouldn't be this hard especially when it seems as though it is such a popular issue.  Oh well, no VS 2008 for me.

Thanks for the help, please let me know if it would be advantageous to send the logs to another forum, or start a new thread.

  • This can be an issue with the permission with the ServiceModel 3.0.0.0 registry key. Find the below link for more details
