.NET framework 3.5 will not install

    Question

  • Hi, This is my first post on these fourms so hi everyone!

Anyway I downloaded Visual Basic 2008 Prof. from the DreamSpark program about 3 days ago. I have been trying to install it ever sense. when I try to install it gets just to the end of the .Net framework installation and then gives me a 1603 error. I am running windows XP SP2 with at least the .Net framework 1.1 installed but I think I have 2.0. I know it isn't just the install file is corrupted because I have tried to install 3.5 through VB express, Silverlight and other means. I am also running as a computer administrator and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times plus the help of a cleanup tool. Now possibly I have a corrupted .DLL file becuase when the setup fails a window pops up and says

"A fatal error occurred. However, mscorees.dll could not be loaded to display the appropriate error message.
    Please reinstall the .NET framework."

I can't think of anything else except I am missing 2 more DLL files UNCDMS.dll and dnssd.dll would reinstalling these fix the problem? How would I do that i've heard dll download sidtes are not to be trusted.

  • Hi Pugway,

    Welcome to MSDN forums.

For error 1603, it's a common message that means "fatal error during installation".

Based on your description, it seems that Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition installation was blocked when it tried to install .NET Framework 3.5. Thus, I would suggest you install .NET framework 3.5 separate from Visual Studio installation.

To install .NET Framework 3.5, you could try the following steps for further troubleshooting.

    1. Check the system requirements for .NET Framework 3.5 installation:
        http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb882520.aspx

    2. Download .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package) which will install .NET 2.0 and 3.0 as prerequisite.
Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading.

    2. Use Cleanup tool to clear the failed installation of .NET Framework 3.5 >> 3.0 >> 2.0 in order

    3. Run the installer to install .NET 3.5 SP1 with Administrator Privilege

    4. If any problem occurs during the installation, use Collect tool to collect the log files for further troubleshooting.

The steps to collect the log:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 full package
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
    - Send vslogs.cab file to me (v-yicche@microsoft.com)
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen

  • Wow I feel like an idiot. I had not let the cleanup tool run for the full time it installed! Thanks :D
