Where is the svcTraceViewer?

    Question

  • I hope this isn't a dumb question but I put together a sample service and I was adding in the diagnostics to play around with the Trace Viewer that Pallmann mentions in his book (Programming "Indigo") and I can't find the freaking thing.  Is this still around?  I'm not using the latest CTP bits so the version I'm running is what Pallmann based his book on (beta 1 I believe).

    I have my cool client.e2e and service.e2e files but nothing to view them in.  Major bummer,  any help would be much appreciated.

  • This is installed with the SDK, not with the WinFX bits. Make sure you install the SDK as well for the tools.

  • Hi

    Tom: First of all, I'm sorry, but i didn't see that you're still using Beta 1. My reply was concerning sept ctp.

    Lorenz:

    here's a configuration that work for me in sept ctp:

     <system.serviceModel>
      <services>
       ...
      </services>

      <diagnostics>

       <messageLogging
        logEntireMessage="true"
        logMalformedMessages="true"
        logMessagesAtServiceLevel="true"
        logMessagesAtTransportLevel="false"
        maxMessagesToLog ="3000" />
      </diagnostics>

     </system.serviceModel>

     <system.diagnostics>
      <sources>
       <source name="IndigoMessageLogTraceSource"
        switchValue="Verbose">
       <!-- listeners -->
        <listeners>
         <add name="xml"
          type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener"
          initializeData="trace.e2e" />
        </listeners>
       </source>
      </sources>
      <trace autoflush="true" />
     </system.diagnostics>

    regards

  • Thank you all for your responses,  this question is based on the Beta 1 install.  I have not yet gone to the CTP.  I guess I could just do that and then I would know where to find the trace viewer.  The problem I'm having is I can not find the svctraceviewer.exe anywhere on my system.  Is it another name?

    It's really not a big deal either way,  I'll just install the CTP and use your path to find it.  Thanks again!

    The default path is .

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0\Bin\svcTraceViewer.exe

    If you changed the path during installation

    $yourpath\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0\Bin\svcTraceViewer.exe
