How to generate makefiles in Visual Studio 2008

    Question

  • Hi,

I can't find the "Export makefile" menu in VS 2008 (Orcas). I want to create makefiles so that I can use the nmake.

Was this feature removed in Orcas?

If so, I'm also open to using the devenv /build or the vcbuild method of building my solution from command line. But I would like to know the pros/cons of devenv/nmake.

    Thanks,

    paul

  • Do you really need it? Remember, you can compile a solution from the command line using "devenv". In my view, this is much easier to set up.

  • Hello Brian,

I totally agree devenv is much easier to use, in fact I've already done a couple of builds using devenv from command line.

But I just wanted to know for my knowledge if the "Export Makefile" feature has been removed?

  • I believe it has. I don't think VS 2003 or 2005 had it either IIRC.

  • I too am needing to export  a makefile for the purpose of porting to both linux and apple platforms.  The export feature seems to be missing in VS 2008.   This is very disappointing indeed.
