Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable

    Question

  • My software requires the installation of "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable".

    1. Is the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" covered by the full Visual studio 2008 version? meaning if i have visual studio 2008 installed do i need to install the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" ?

    2. are the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" and the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable" independent ? meaning:
        A. 2008 is not replacing the 2005 version and if my software needs the 2005 version i need to install that and not the 2008 version
        b.  installing both cannot corrupt one another even if 2005 installed after the 2008 version ?

    Thanks

    You can't expect the VS2008 redistributable to support your software, if that is what you are asking. It may or may not work.

    If you software requires the VS2005 redistributable, that is what you need to install.

    correct.

    Personally, the fact that your software depends on having the VS2005 redistributable installed is cumbersome and inconvenient. You should consider other deployment techniques.
