The type or namespace name 'IdentityServer' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft'

    Question

  • I am trying to follow the AD FS 2.0 Federation with a WIF Application Step-by-Step Guide from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff631096(WS.10).aspx.

    On the server I have Windows 2008r2, ADFS 2.0, IIS, Visual Studio 2008 and the WIF SDK.

    I follow the steps in the document but when I get to the point of testing the application I get the following error in IE.

    Server Error in '/adfs/ls' Application.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Compilation Error
    Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately.

    Compiler Error Message: CS0234: The type or namespace name 'IdentityServer' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft' (are you missing an assembly reference?)

    Source Error:

    Line 9:  using System.Reflection;
    Line 10:
    Line 11: public partial class WebApplication : Microsoft.IdentityServer.Web.PassiveProtocolApplication
    Line 12: {
    Line 13:     /// <summary>

    Source File: c:\inetpub\adfs\ls\Global.asax.cs    Line: 11

    Has anyone else managed to get these samples to work? Is there some other reference I have to put somewhere, and if so where?

  • Just to follow this up - I reinstaled everything twice on 2008r2 with exactly the same result.

    I then rebuilt my VM with Windows 2008, followed exactly the same steps, and it works.

    So it looks to me like there's something missing from the instructions for 2008r2. At least I can get it working with 2008, which is sufficient for my demo.

  • Are there any other solutions on this one?  I am having this same exact issue, but we are running all Server 2008 R2 servers and really can't downgrade to Windows Server 2008.

  • Any update on this? I have and hybrid deployment with exchange 2010 and office 365, having the same problem with the adfs 2.0 login page. All the servers on the enviroment runs W2k8R2, and there is no chance to downgrade the operating system.

    As I tested, doing the logon process from the ADFS Proxy, it works like a charm. From other servers on the enviroment, the redirected URL doesnt load. From outside the company, it gives the same error specified by Carol.

    Does anyone find a solution to this? If its a R2 problem, will MS give us any solution drived through an update?

    Thanks a lot

  • Hey

    I have also the same problem on a windows 2008 R2 x64 server.

    Has anybody found a solution? It's have to be only a missing dll file.

  • Reinstall by doing the following:

    1. Go to: Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\View Installed updates

    - Uninstall Active Directory Federation Services 2.0

    2. Open IIS:

    - Remove /adfs and /adfs/ls applications from Default Web Site

    - Remove ADFSAppPool from Applications Pool.

    3. Remove folder C:\inetpub\adfs (or wherever you host it)

    4. Restart and rerun ADFS Setup Wizard.

    5. To test: go to: https://<hostname>/adfs/ls/IdpInitiatedSignon.aspx

    - Should see a login page.
