Error in template "csWPFBrowserApplication.vstemplate"

    Question

  • On all machines running Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition or Team Suite we are seeing that the following events are logged in the Event log:

    Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Visual Studio - VsTemplate
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1
    Date:  28/12/2007
    Time:  9:22:37
    User:  N/A
    Computer: TFB01
    Description:
Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Windows\1033\WPFBrowserApplication.zip), file (csWPFBrowserApplication.vstemplate).  Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField).  Parsing will attempt to recover.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

These are new machines with fresh installations of either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2003 (build machine).

    Is this a known issue?

  • The Warning might indicate there is corrupted file(s) in WPFBrowserApplication.zip

Are you OK to create a new WPF Browser Application?

    Thanks

    Hello

It works but I just find it strange that we get these warnings. We have downloaded Team Suite and the Developer Edition using different MSDN accounts and we are talking about clean machines. Some are Dell Optiplex 755 workstations and others are HP and Dell notebooks.

Creating a WPF application works or at least for as far as I can tell since we don't use WPF. So I cannot tell if this is going to give problems once we decide to use WPF.

    Regards

    Gabriel

  • Hi Gabriel

I moved it from VS setup forum to WPF forum for better answer.

    Thanks

  • Hi Gabriel

The EnableEditOfLocationField tag is also in my csWPFBrowserApplication.vstemplate file inside WPFBrowserApplication.zip, the whole stuff in csWPFBrowserApplication.vstemplate gonna be:

I think the problem may not be here.

When did you get this warning, simply open the VS 2008? Or do some operations fire the warning?

If we run devenv /log "C:\vsstartlog.txt", what says in vsstartlog.txt?

    Thanks for you information.

  • I have got the similar problem as well.

VS2008 works no error up to now, but I can sometimes find a series of warnings via Event Viewer, as below:

    -------------------------------------------

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\Web\CSharp\1033\CRWebSite.zip), file (CrystalReportsWebSite.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\Web\VisualBasic\1033\CRWebSite.zip), file (CrystalReportsWebSite.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Windows\1033\WPFApplication.zip), file (csWPFApplication.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Windows\1033\WPFCustomControl.zip), file (csWPFCustomControl.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Windows\1033\WPFControlLibrary.zip), file (csWPFControlLibrary.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.

Error in Template (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Windows\1033\WPFBrowserApplication.zip), file (csWPFBrowserApplication.vstemplate). Unknown element (EnableEditOfLocationField). Parsing will attempt to recover.
    -------------------------------------------

BTW: These warning-logs will be created every time after "devenv /installvstemplates" run.

  • Has anybody found the fix for this problem? As Skight mentioned, these warning-logs happen every time the templates are parsed using the /installvstemplate switch. But they do not occur after that. I am able to create new WpfApplications without any problem. I am using Visual Studio 2008.

  • I thought it isn't a big problem, since they're warnings instead of errors.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I think you can try an utility called Advanced Zip Repair to repair your Zip file. It works rather well for my corrupt Zip files. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/azr/

  • I get the very same issue with my downloaded student licence of 2008pro. The warnings appear in my event manager but in my case the splash screen appears but visual studio does not continue to load the devenv process stays at 0%cpu. I have done a repair and it worked previously. Any ideas?
I get the following output from /log:-
