Installing .Net Framework 3.5 with SP1 on Windows 8

    Question

  • I have developed an application that requires .Net 3.5.1 to run.

When trying to install .Net 3.5 SP1 (from this link) in Windows 8, a message appears saying:

An app on your PC needs the following Windows feature:

.Net Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 AND 3.0)

Therefore, i assume that the file i downloaded is only the service pack, and i would need to download and install .Net 3.5 first, then install .Net 3.5 SP1? Is that correct?

If so, is there any way to install .Net 3.5 with SP1 in one single install?

Answers

  • To install .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8, specific procedures are required. as opposed to downloading an installer yourself and running it (BTW the cumulative installer for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 includes .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and all patches through SP1 for 3.5).

Please follow the instructions in this article to install 3.5 on Windows 8:

  • Thanks for the reply.

I can now see that Windows doesn't allow you to install .Net 3.5 using a redistributable at all, hence why it was prompting me to enable it via 'Windows Features' instead when i tried to run the dotnetfx35.exe.

I used the following command line in that MSDN article at it installed .Net 3.5 with SP1 from Windows Update:

    DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All
