I've similar problem (NOT exact one) http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxbcl/thread/4207c95f-bfbc-4b04-8d99-27abd5c0d96b/
I'm trying to connect (wmimgmt.msc) my remote server located at the parent forest/domain from a server located at child forest/domain.
When I use my child forest/domain id to connect (wmimgmt.msc) it's giving me following error "failed to connect to //REMOTECOMPUTER because "Win32: The RPC server is unavailable".
Where as when I try to connect to remote server (in parent domain) using parent forest id then it's working fine. However, both the IDs are part of same groups like local administrator group of remote computer in parent domain. Also, I've verified DCOM security settings all are intact.
Strange point is if I Login to my parent domain server with child domain Id or use runas child domain id locally in parent domain remote server then wmimgmt.msc is working fine.
I would like to here some pointers from experts !!
Here is a troubleshooting article: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4494.troubleshooting-the-rpc-server-is-unavailable.aspx
Please check it.
Hi Mike ! - Excellent guide. It seems we’re facing the following error highlighted in the wiki article. (Active Directory Symptoms:Win32: The RPC server is unavailable). However, not able to find the cause till now :(
Troubleshooting: To resolve this issue, remove the ICMP traffic restriction between domain controllers. When establishing an RPC session prior to AD replication, ICMP traffic is used. If the ICMP fails, so does the RPC session establishment, and hence AD replication also fails. ISA 2004 can prevent ICMP traffic with the exception of computers specified in the Remote Management Computers computer set which can be configured in system policy. 3. The following error will appear when attempting to connect to the computer. "computer <\\servername.domain.local> cannot be managed. The network path was not found. RPC server is unavailable. Or when viewing the properties of the remote computer you will receive the error: "Win32: The RPC server is unavailable".
Based on your above follow-up reply, it seems that you perfer to the root cause rather than the solution, right?
Sorry, we don't have any solution yet. We're still stuck with the problem.
So this is your scenario:
>>Win32: The RPC server is unavailable
And the troubleshooting doesn't help you, right?

procmon reveals following (access denied) errors related to remote registry. However, my child domain user account has full rights on those registry keys. Unfortunately, no clues till now :(
