vb.net push notifications

Answers

  • Okay well then implementation can be done with a custom socket connection better because he can set timeout on the packet and secured port communication (lol he would only know about the security on it then). Another option would be he could customize his php code on the server side to wait till a set time to respond back.

  • can you please give more details? I thought push notifications were for windows phone only? I do not see any details about push notification for windows 7 or windows 8 from google or any windows team blogs.

  • From what i heard its only available on windows phone unless you have link? Even the push service from reading a windows blog here says its only for windows phone (describing the service but still talks more about windows phone and i didn't see a mention about using on windows 8):

  • oh, then need address of php push notification service on linux you are using and query string samples of how its used.  Maybe a test user log-on credentials if necessary. For the query string i mean addresses like this:

    http://www.mywebsite.com/service.php?item=value&item2=value

and explain what item and item2 and values that go into them. If you created a php soap or rest type service for push notifications that would make life easier for people answering you here.

  • If you don't need it to scale to a large number of clients, how about polling the server for updates instead?

  • well restful apis work smilar to the above in my last post so im confused as to implemention. Andrew confused as to what you mean by polling for updates?

OP confused as to your implementation as cloud services return and exchange data that way all the time with some changes it just happens in the background. If you read that article i posted it explains precisely how a push notification service works and it relies on "cloud services".

Do you want to save data the above to php server? Another would be have a socket connection too on the other end accepting connections on the linux server.

Polling: the client checks for new information at intervals. Like kids in a car saying "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?..." except the server will not get fed up with repeated requests.
