TFS 2010 is installed on a separate server

The problem is that I can't choose source control in Tools - Options - Source control. It is set to "None", and I can see "Visual Studio Team Foundation Server" in the drop-down list. But as soon as I click on it, it jumps right back to "none". I have tried rebooting and reinstalling everything but Visual Studio (BIDS) itself (Team Explorer 2008, Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and VSTS Forward compatibility update), but nothing seems to help.

I don't know if the following entries from the Event Viewer is relevant:

"Error: .NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed to compile: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Client.Cache.dll . Error code = 0x8007000b"

"Warning: Error in Template (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\Web\VisualBasic\1033\AdoNetEntityDataModelVB_ASPNET.zip), file (ModelObjectItemVB_ASPNET.vstemplate). Invalid template element (TemplateID) value (Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.VSTemplate.ModelObjectItemVB_ASPNET). "
