I'm new in silverlight, so i'm follwing the tutorial http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff713719%28v=vs.91%29.aspx
to understand ria services. However when i get to the part when i can use the pencil to edit data in dataform, it just don't let me edit the fields. The button is pressed, but the fields keep closed. I did this tutorial many times and always get the same issue.

What is the datacontext of your dataform? It should be an entity framework object, or at least an object that implements IEditableObject.
Also, if you are using RIA did you create a DomainService? If so there is a metadata file that gets generated for you as well, and it is possible to control the dataform access, read/write properties via attributes in that file.
