Missing Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll

    Question

  • Assembly Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll is missing from the platform.  I cannot build a TFS build definition without this dll.  Documentation on the assy places it both in the GAC and in   ... \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies.  How can I get this assy?

  • Hi Jeff,

Sorry for not help you resolve the issue timely and exactly.

We have analyzed Visual Studio 2010 Installation package, Team Explorer Installation package, and Team Foundation Server 2010 Installation package.

The result is "Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll" is a TFS client assembly. To use this assembly, you may need TFS and VS2010 installed.

So build the solution not on TFS server or TFS build machine will missing this assembly.

  • Hi Jeff,

    Thank you for your post.

In order to narrow down, could you please log on as TFSBuild service account on Build Machine, and use MSBuild command line to build/test the project, could it success?

Would you please post detail error message here, this will help us narrow know the issue.

If I have misunderstood anything, please free feel to let me know.

  • Thank you for your fast response...

I have just one, specific, request:  Can you just somehow get the missing assembly to me please?

If you need to continue with diagnosis, perhaps I need to supply some more information.  I am to modify a build definition from a working build definition template, in order to insert an 3rd-party analysis activity.  The solution now contains the original build definition (the workflow xaml), without modification.  The solution is to be built on my own development server, not the tfs server, nor on our build machine (I do not have the TFSBuild account).  But I did search the build machine, and the TFS server just in case, for the missing assembly, and it is not present there either.  The assembly is not present on the machine of any engineer on the team.

I ran msbuild with /v:diag, but on my own domain account, which is a member of administrators on the machine.   I won't paste all 800+ lines of output here, but the error is:

    ...

    Build FAILED.

    "D:\_VisualStudioProjects\Reporting (Fox)\BuildProcessTemplates\BuildProcessProjects\CI-System Analyzed\CI-System Analyzed\CI-System Analyzed.csproj" (default target) (1) ->(XamlMarkupCompilePass1 target) ->  AnalyzedBuildProcess.xaml :

  • Hi Jeff,

    Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll is in GAC(C:\Windows\assembly), not in \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies.

If you want to use it, what about try to add this reference manually.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Lily,

I beg you to read my posts.  Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll is missing.  I cannot reference it manually or any other way if it is missing.  I have listed all the places where I have searched for it, and my last post shows the 100+ locations MSBuild searched for it.  I don't know how I can make this any more clear.  Can you please provide me with the dll, or otherwise let me know how or where I can find it.

  • Lily,

TFS is installed on our TFS server, but the assembly is not present on that machine.  Since the build process is what actually loads the assembly, and that runs on the build machine, it seems more likely that the build machine would have the assembly, but the assembly is not on that machine either.  There are numerous Microsoft.TeamFoundation... dlls on several of our machines, and none has this one missing assembly.

I will need this dll to modify build definition templates, and this will be done on my own development server, so I need it on my dev machine anyway.  All other dlls needed to build the definitions are present.

Since you say I must have TFS installed to get the dll, and TFS IS installed and the dll is still missing, can you now maybe provide the dll?

This tool is used to repair missing Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll error, you can try it.

  • So, install install AdvancedPCTweaker to "clean up" my development server?  I "can try it"?  Really?  That's your solution?  Is this the best Microsoft can do?  I can't just give up on Microsoft, and give up on this issue, because I need to modify TFS build profiles.

PLEASE supply the missing dll, and PLEASE do not recommend that I install any more 3rd-party marketing tools to fix this problem.  What I need is a ACTUAL SOLUTION, which I have already identified.  It is so simple.  Why must I spend weeks begging you for a missing dll?

  • You need to pull it from the GAC.  You can view the GAC files by running:

    regsvr32 -u C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\shfusion.dll

    Then go to C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client\10.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a

You can copy the dll from there.  After you are done, re-register shfusion.dll.

    regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\shfusion.dll

To expand on this (which is what I had to do to get the dll) you can install a free program called Everything from http://www.voidtools.com/. This program indexes every single on your system (the program is extremely efficient) and so you can locate this file that way as well (like I did).

  • Hi,

    You can try:

    1 add reference

    2 brows to c:\windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client\10.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Client.dll

    Hope it is useful.

    Best Regards,

    SawyerTian

I have the same problem. Did you found solution?

  • I had this same problem when upgrading a custom TeamBuild WorkFlow that includes CustomBuildActivities from TFS2010 to 2012.  I had to upgrade all the references from version 10 to version 11.  But, in my project that included the WF xaml file, it kept telling me there was a missing reference to Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll.  I could find this library no where.

The problem is that the file is in the GAC which won't show up in the file search.  We never use GAC'ed in our files in our projects; so adding a reference from the GAC is a little different than a dll you can find on your hard drive.  To add the reference:

    1. Right Click Add Reference in the project.
    2. Click Browse
    3. You'll get an "Add Dialog" popup.  In the Folder location at the top of the dialog type: "C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL".  (Note this is not really a file folder, but it's how VS represents the contents of the GAC.)
    4. You will find a list of folders, of which "Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client" will be one.  From there you can drill down into the dll reference and click Add on the dialog.

  • I had to do:

    pushd c:\Windows\assembly

    dir Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.Client.dll /s

Then I created a localRef folder and copied into it.  Then added this to TFS VC.

It is a gotcha even in June 2013.  The DefaultTemplate.11.1.xaml uses it.

  • Try from,

    1. From C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio XXXX\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies
      1. Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TestImpact.BuildIntegration.dll

I was able to find the dll there.

    I found this information from - http://www.ewaldhofman.nl/post/2010/04/29/customize-team-build-2010-e28093-part-4-create-your-own-activity.aspx
