residual visual c++ 2008 redistributable package files

    Question

  • hello,

    i needed to uninstall/reinstall the Visual C++2008 redistribuatable and its sp1 for visual studio 2010.  after downloading and installing the latest packages, i now have a bunch of files in the root directory (c:\).  is there a cleanup tool that removes all these leftover files?

    thanks!

  • Hi usphilos,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

    You can refer to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950683 . These temporary files are erroneously generated by the installer into the system root directory instead of the temp directory. So you can safely delete them.

    Best regards,

  • these are the files i see and am not sure if this is all of them:

    vc_red.msi

    vc_red.cab

    install.exe

    instal.res.1028.dll

    install.res.1031.dll

    install.res.1033.dll

    install.res.1036.dll

    install.res.1040.dll

    install.res.1041.dll

    install.res.1042.dll

    install.res.2052.dll

    install.res.3082.dll

    eula.1028.txt

    eula.1031.txt

    eula.1033.txt

    eula.1036.txt

    eula.1040.txt

    eula.1041.txt

    eula.1042.txt

    eula.2052.txt

    eula.3082.txt

    globaldata.ini

    install.ini

    vcredist.bmp

    also, i am not sure what to make of this, but when i installed the default installation of vs2010, it installed two line items in "Programs and Features" for visual c++,

        Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4974

        Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

    but when i reinstalled the downloadable package and its sp1, i ended up with,

        Visual C++ 2008 Redistiributable x86 - 9.0.21022

        Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

    this is curios and would like to know if the new version is the correct version for visual studio 2010 to work properly.

    windows update comes back with no additional updates.

    According to your description, I'd like to move this thread to "Visual Studio Setup and Installation" forum for better support where more experts live.

    Thanks for your understanding.

  • thank you for the link and answer, much appreciated.

    (I do wonder why, it seems, that a three to four year problem in vs2008 is still not fixed in the packages we are all still downloading.)

    my apologies for asking multiple questions in the same post.  i will move the other question to a new entry.
