  • That is a great question.

There is a great explanation for these architectures (processor types) on wikipedia:

    X86:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86

    X64: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X64

    IA64: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IA64

Yeah I tried their first, but X64 and IA64 now lead to the same page.  I was looking for a simpler explanation without having to read a gigantic article.

  • I had the same question and googled it to land here where people don't know the answer but lead you astray to other sites to read. Please don't post a reply if you don't know damned answer.

  • I'ts an old question but you must look for the answer on others pages.

For the ones that want a quick response:

x86 versions are for intel compatible 32bits processors

x64 versions are for intel compatible 64bits processors

IA64 versions are for intel itanium processors

    best regards

This is the only needed answer in a few lines, thx!

@Aaronru: What makes you think it was such a "great" question? TS just wanted to know what version of the executable he had to download... I can fully understand why he was so annoyed.

  • You may run msinfo32.exe on your system (in Command prompt), check System type under System Summary;

  • ENCASE ANYONE IS STILL WONDERING

    x86 is for 32bit machines

x64 is for ALL 64bit machines

IA64 is for SPECIFICALLY 64bit Intel Itanium microprocessors.

If you have a 64 bit machine but you're not sure if it uses an Itanium processor, you can find that under your system properties.  Remember x64 will work fine on all 64bit machines however.
