Unable to create Team Project on TFS 2013 Preview with Visual Studio 2012 update 3

    Question

  • I'm getting the TF30172 error when I try to create a team project on the 2013 Preview TFS.  Once the project is created with VS 2013 preview, I can access it with VS 2012.  Just can't create a project.  I haven't found anything in the documentation that indicates that this should be the case.  I thought VS 2012 update 3 was fully supported.

  • This is "by design" the project creation wizard of the team explorer must match the version of the team foundation server.

  • Hi RJRapson and Daniel,

    Thanks for your post.

I think there will has a “VS 2012 GDR” for VS 2012 soon, it like we need to install VS 2010 SP1 GDR for VS 2010 SP1 when we want connect to TFS 2012 using VS 2010.

Let’s wait the Microsoft office document.

  • Hi John,

Does this mean that I'm stuck right now? I installed TFS 2013 Preview but I cannot install VS2013 for now. I wanted to create a new project in order to test the new features.

    Best regards,

    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

    Thanks for your reply.

Why you can’t install VS 2013?

I suggest you install VS 2012 as the client connect to your TFS 2013 Preview.

  • Hi Tom,

you can only create team projects in the preview version with VS2013. The connection and working with the new created team project with VS2012 is also possible. You can not create a team project in TFS2013 with VS2012. That´s because the creation wizard needs the new team explorer.  The error is „you either don’t have permissions or are using an old client“

    Kind regards,

    Daniel

  • Hi John,

I can't install VS2013 because that's the policy. For now it's VS2012 Update 3. I'm not sure if I understand you well. I can connect to TFS 2013 from within my VS2012 Update 3, and I can do everything on the existing team projects, but I want to create a new team project in order to explore the new feature without impacting the existing ones.

    Best regards,

    Tom

  • Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply. That's the exact error that I have. I'll install VS2013 on a virtual machine for now, in order to be able to create a new Team Project.

    Best regards,

    Tom

  • I suppose it is time to upgrade to Visual Studio 2013 if I intend on using TFS 2013.

  • Hi. Any news about the GDR for VS2012? I'm currently unable to create projects from within VS, though as a workaround, I can use Team Explorer 2013 (separate download).

    A minor nuisance.

    Thanks.
