TF31003: Cannot connect remotely to Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010 from Visual Studio 2008

    Question

  • Hello TFS Gurus .. :)

We have upgraded TFS 2008 server to TFS 2010 server . We are facing the issue in connectivity for users using VS 2008. Users with rights of TFS Admistrator and Project Collection admistartors are able to connect.

Simple users which are just Project Administrator in Project are not able to connect. and they are getting error message shown below. If I add these users in TFS Administrator or Project Collection Administrator group, they are able to connect, but I cannot add everyone to these admin group.

    VS 2008 Error

I have done the steps as mentioned on many sites in following order:

    1. Install Team explorer 2008
    2. Install SP1 for VS 2008
    3. Installed 'Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010'

Any clue to solve this issue will be helpful.

  • I'm hearing this from 2 other projects as well. It looks like an update broke the compatibility somehow.

I submitted an item to connect.

  • This is probably better suited for the Administration and Setup forum and not the Version Control forum -- since it is not version control specific, we will not be able to provide as much guidance on how to resolve this scenario.

  • Are you using the 'new style' url, or the 'old style'?

for VS2008 to TFS2010 you need to postfix the url with the Team Project Collection, so when you enter:

    https://tfsserver/tfs

    Append the Collection to it:

    https://tfsserver/tfs/collection

  • I can confirm I am using new style url as described above.

    To update on the issue:

I have created new Project Collection and it is behaving normally. Project users are able to connect to this Project Collection.

The user access issue is with upgraded Proect Collection "Default Collection". We have upgraded TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 and all TFS 2008 projects are part of "Default Collection".

    I have 2 questions now:

. Is there a way to fix this user access issue ?

. Can we migrate projects with all their history and details to other Project collection in TFS 2010. for example can I copy all the projects from 'Default Collection' to new project collection.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Hafeez,

    Thanks for your reply.

Try to install TFS 2010 SP1 on your TFS 2010 Server, check if it can resolve this issue.

TFS 2010 not support to migrate team project from one Team Project Collection to another Team Project Collection directly. To migrate team project to another Team Project Collection with the work item history, changesets history, etc, you can try to the TFS Integration Tools to do that. But there are some items are not migrated when using this tool, please refer to the Limitationssection in http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/f854dd59-8eeb-4673-8d9a-ae012989bfa2.
