security update for Windows Vista (KB958644) - errorcode 80070002

So I started to look in my computer and notic that the .NET 3.5 ServicePack 1 Isn't installed on the computer. So I try to download that to but I just get i SETUP.EXE has stop working. So How to fix this? :P

  • Hi Maaax,

    Thank you for your post.

I looked into the log files and found the following error snippet:

    [10/21/09,16:29:41] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS): "C:\Windows\system32\WUSA.exe" "c:\de7866d6a7ec9b89fe06a19af0b117\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetmsp\x86\NetFX2.0-KB948609-v6001-x86.msu" /quiet /norestart

Error return code 34 usually means reboot is required.

You might directly install NetFX2.0-KB948609-v6001-x86.msu from installation source (\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetmsp\x86\NetFX2.0-KB948609-v6001-x86.msu) and reboot the machine.

Could you please try the following points step by step?
    - Use Cleanup Tool to remove .NET Framework 3.5
    - Download .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package)
    - Copy dotnetfx35.exe to HDD
    - Run the following command line via Start menu >> Run to extract the files:
      [path]\Dotnetfx35.exe /x <extract location>
After extraction, you will see a file and folder structure that show the list of files for each components in Framework 3.5
    - Go to ...\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetmsp\x86 folder and run NetFX2.0-KB948609-v6001-x86.msu
    - After the installation, reboot the machine
    - Run the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (Full Package) setup again

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

  • Okey, I followed the steps untill:
    - Go to ...\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetmsp\x86 folder and run NetFX2.0-KB948609-v6001-x86.msu
I started to install it and when it gets to around 40%, It just stops and says: Some updates didn't install.
So, how to make it install?

  • Hi Maaax,

    Thank you for your reply.

Based on your description, we can narrow down the cause of your issue to KB948609 installation. It's one Windows Update of .NET Framework.
For more information on KB948609, please check: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948609 .

In your WindowsUpdate.log file, I found the following error message:

2009-10-21 16:56:02:402+0200    1    182    101    {1A487316-AC1A-4868-A9EF-F8FFCF8DB8CC}    501    80070002    wusa    Failure    Content Install    Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070002: Uppdatering för Windows (KB948609) .

Since HRESULT 0x80070002 is a general error which means "the system cannot find the file specified". It's a common error of Windows Update.
Referring to the error message 0x80070002 of Windows Update, here some useful documents for you.

If no avail, I would suggest you to try Windows Vista - Windows Update forum to repair Windows Update since the error is caused by Windows Update. After Windows Update is repaired, run .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installer again.

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

but didn't help, and I think I did what u wanted on:

If no avail, I would suggest you to try Windows Vista - Windows Update forum to repair Windows Update since the error is caused by Windows Update. After Windows Update is repaired, run .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installer again.
I went there and downloaded a update repair tool.
So I got a new question, you said before that Framework came with all vista versons or somthing, Dose it get installed on the computer when u install Vista? or is it when u maybe install the graphik card or somthing els?
And I have notice that like 3/5 times when I am going to turn my computer of, it starts to like install some updates or somthing, even if I havn't downloaded any new updates.

  • Hi Maaax,

    Thank you for your post.

When we install Windows Vista on the machine, .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 will also be installed together since they are the components of Vista.

For the scenario "I have notice that like 3/5 times when I am going to turn my computer of, it starts to like install some updates or somthing, even if I havn't downloaded any new updates" that your described, it's the feature of Windows Update.
Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft that provides updates for the Microsoft Windows operating system and its installed components. It will automatically download the updates from website and install it even you don't manually download it.
If you want to turn this feature off, please follow the steps mentioned here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off.
For more information of Windows Update, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Update

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know. :)

  • ok, but if I would formate my harddrive again, Do you think it will work to get Framework installed then?

  • Hi Maaax,

    Thank you for your reply.

Formatting your OS to start from scratch is one of the workarounds for your concern. However, I could not guarantee that it would work after installed on a fresh installation.
You can try to format your machine and then install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 full package installer. If you have any problem during the installation, please feel free to let me know. I'm willing to help you on that. :)

  • I'm having the same problem he was, and the above does NOT work because the above .msu file brings up the message that this msu is not supported for Vista Enterprise.
