Installing VS 2008 SP1 on Vista Enterprise fails

    Question

  •      I have tried repeatedly to install VS 2008 SP1 on a Vista Enterprise machine and it gets over half way through, fails with a fatal error, and rolls back.   I ran the patch removal tool first (even though SP1 beta had not been installed).  The Service Pack installed fine on an XP machine.  I ran the collect.exe tool and put the vslogs.cab at http://cid-ccb8ff20c6f654f5.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/VS2008SP1/vslogs.cab The tail end of the log file is below.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

  • Hello all,
I finally got this installed.  The problem was a third party tool from Liquid Technologies called XML Studio which plugs into Visual Studio.  When I un-installed that, I was able to install the SP1.  I will inform them of this problem.

    Hello,

I have carefully checked the log files you uploaded.    Here are some representative lines of records:

     “MSI (s) (7C:04) [13:34:46:431]: Note: 1: 1310 2: 5 3: C:\Config.Msi\47bbdf.rbf

MSI (s) (7C:04) [13:34:46:509]: Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU -- Error 1310.Error writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\47bbdf.rbf.  System error 5.  Verify that you have access to that directory.

Error 1310.Error writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\47bbdf.rbf.  System error 5.  Verify that you have access to that directory.

I think the error message is easy to understand.   Thus, my suggestion:

    1.       Please make sure your account could access the installation folders.

    2.       Please disable your anti-virus and Windows Update temporarily.  Then have another try.   Because some anti-virus software might make the installer failed to call some files.

    3.       Try unregister and register Windows Installer, please following these steps:

    1)      “Start” à “Run”

    2)      Type “msiexec /unreg”.

    3)      “Start” à “Run”

    4)      Type “msiexec /regserver”

If you have any problems, please just let me know.

             Thanks,

    Best Regards,

    Lingzhi

  •  Lingzhi,
Thank you for your prompt response.  Unfortunately, it didn't work.  I unregistered and re-registered the installer, turned off anti-virus, stopped Windows Update, stopped Machine Debug manager.  At first I couldn't fine Config.Msi folder.  Then realized it was a system file, so I made it visible and watched it during the install.
During the install, just before it failed.  I saw a new file being written in C:\Config.Msi.  It was b1ee005.rbs and reached a size of 1,745 KB before the install failed, was rolled back and that file was deleted.  So evidently the installer had write access to that folder.
Any other ideas?  I do thank you for your attention.

    Hi, Stan,

            Sorry for the delay.

Have you tried to create a new Windows user account with administrative privileges, and run the installer as administrator?   And would you please disable the UAC (User Account Control) temporarily?   On how to disable the UAC of Vista, please check this article:

           http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

If the problem still exists, please just tell me.   I will always be here, try to my best to help you.

           Thanks,

    Hi, Stan,

I just handled another customer’s installer problem, in which his problem is something like yours.   He also got the error code of 1310 when installing the Visual Studio 2008 SP1.    However he got the real error problem when run the MSI file, which is in some temp folder under C:\.   And the file of course it created by the installer of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installation.

The message said that the Windows Installer version is lower than the demand.   So would please check the Windows Installer version in your operation system?    And update it to Windows Installer 4.5 (latest version) if possible.    You could download the latest Windows Installer here.

Or you could try to run the MSI file in the temp folder to test the deep reason of the error.   It is under C:\[some messy code]\.

Again, any more questions, please just let me know.

            Thanks,

  • Hi Lingzhi,

Thanks again for sticking with me on this.  Before I started any of this I had installed the latest installer (Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86--installer.msu) and also Powershell (Windows6.0-KB928439-x86--Poweershell.msu) as instructed in the service pack read me.  As mentioned before, I had also run the patch removal tool.
