This is a re-post from a thread in the technet forums. Luckily I has someone point me this way. I was unaware of this forum.  I have been unable to find a solution to this.

    What I know:

The 8007006E error means "The system cannot open the device or file specified." This error indicated that some files (in Visual Studio 2008 ) were missing or corrupt that the current updates were looking for.

All three updates are related to VS2008.

    Things I have done:

    -Repaired the .Net framework.

    -Attempted manual install.

-Re installed SP1 for Visual Studio.

-Removed Macro tools for Visual studio as one forum suggested.

-Diligently searched the "intertubes" for an answer to my issue.

    More info:

-Small Business Server (Windows Server 2008 Standard FE) x64

-Below is a short snippet from the WindowsUpdate.log file. I don't know how well this will help...

I would greatly appreciate any input on this issue.

    Thanks!, in advance.

    Hi Austin Justice,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

From your description, I think the installation of VS2008 and VS2008SP1 was corrupt.

    Solution:

To know if this is the reason, we need your logs. So I suggest you completely uninstall Visual    Studio 2008. Refer to your control panel and follow the products list on this Readme file to uninstall Visual Studio 2008 manually. (You need to download the readme file). Then reinstall it and its SP1 to collect your installation logs.

Please collect VS2008 Installation logs with this tool.

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here. (Please clear your %temp% folder, then run your installation again)

    Best regards,

Thanks for so diligently keeping up with this issue, even when I have not posted in awhile. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately I have yet to make any progress until today. I have had a couple of other things come up and surprisingly enough, I put the update issue on the back burner.

I have been speaking with our developers and they are concerned about how removing visual studio might affect our client. ( although it would be for a short time.) For now I tried an alternative. This was done with your advice in mind. Hoping that you were correct and that a couple of files may be simply corrupted, I went to the control panel and right clicked to repair the program.

This never works to fix an issue like this, so I was confident it would be the same for this instance as well. However, once the repair was completed I was able to install the update KB972222  but unable to install the others. I am going to schedule it for a reboot and let you know where it is after that. In the event it does not help, I will go with what you said and just do it on a weekend.

Barry, thanks again for the help.

    Barry,

The repair from the control panel worked like a charm.... I guess that is something I should have done way before posting this as a question.....

Anyway, I marked your suggestion as the answer. What you suggested is basically what I did, just excluding removing and re-installing the program. I a, sure if anyone else has a similar issue, they should follow the instructions you gave.

    Thanks again!

    - Austin Justice

I'm having the same problem, XPSP3.

    I reinstalled VS 2008 SP1.

I get the same 6 updates over and over:

    KB2251487 fails (0x645)

    KB2669970 fails (0x645)

    KB971092 success

    KB972222 fails (0x645)

    KB973675 fails (0x645)

    KB253824 success

I tried downloading the update package manually and ran the Fix It program.  But it's in an endless loop.  I can't reinstall VS, I don't have the installation media and my current MSDN won't allow me to download it.
