Invalid product key??

Question

I have an MSDN account (IEEE member) and I downloaded Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Beta 2.

After using it for several months with no problem I got an error message so I uninstalled it and tried to install again but then I get this message: "You have entered an invalid product key for this product. The 25-character product key may be found...". But I haven't written any product key! What can I do? I never had any problem with software download from my MSDN account...

Hi Alg,

Thanks for the post. If you are the MSDN user, then all the product key will be available in your MSDN account, you can access it any span of time. Just login to the below URL and fetch the key.

Thanks for your reply, Raman.

The problem is that I am never asked for the key before I get this error.

This error is prompted just after the "I have read the conditions" page, but I was not asked for the key before...

Any ideas?

Hi Alg,

Thanks for the quick response.

If you have installed VS 2010 using the web installer and you need to get a product key you can find the correct product keys on this page : 

 https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/cc137106.aspx

 Just find the right key for your product and active your VS installation using it and things should be good.

Thanks once again.

I didn't use the web installer. I just went to this site: http://msdn04.e-academy.com/ieee_cs_r9 with my user and password and downloaded it.

In the download page it is prompted: "Serial number: Not needed". And obviously I am not asked for a key when I try to install it, but I get that "You have entered an invalid product key for this product" error. I don't know if I should do something in regedit, maybe the previous version was not properly uninstalled...

Hi Alg,

Thanks for the clarifications. I found some information from the above web site which is maintained by school. Here are steps to find the product key.

Q: Where can I find the serial key for my software?
A: If you have downloaded (or borrowed a CD from school) you can find the serial number for your product in the following manner:

1.  Log-in to the site

2.  Click on the MYSOFTWARE button found on the left side of the page

3.  Choose the software in question and click the LINK found under Deliverable (i.e. Download, CD Check Out, etc))

4.  You should be able to see all of the software details information including the serial key number (If one is required).

Q: My serial key issues an invalid message, can I get a new one?
A: In order to request a new key you will need to contact your program administrator. To view this information, please click on the Support button above.

 

I hope this help to get the new product key.

I have the same problem.  The problem isn't getting a license number,

the problem is the install never allows you to enter a license #, and then complains

you entered the wrong #.  I've been searching for a few days and it seems

more people are hitting this problem, so maybe enough people will report

this problem that MS will take notice.

Thanks for another hand in this regard.

Ofcourse MS will look into this issue. MS always eager to get customer feedback and issues in any context.

But as per my 14 years of experience with MS technologies, I never found there is some issue like this. If the key is valid for right product you are allowed to go ahead.

There are some cases that you can use the particular product key for some definite number of times, say 5-10. After this counts over it will display the same error to the user. Buying a new product key or contacting MS Customer support will be the great option to get it unlocked.

Thank you both. I think my problem is the last one, because I have installed and uninstalled it maybe 3 or 4 times in the same computer. So I will contact MS Customer Support to get it unlocked.

Thank you for your post.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate pre-released versions should be expired on June 30th 2010.

Thus, if you want to use Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate further, I would suggest you to download the RTM version from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06a32b1c-80e9-41df-ba0c-79d56cb823f7&displaylang=en.
Or you can try VS2010 Express products: http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloads/.

I don't think that is the biggest problem...

I'm a new MSDN user, just downloaded VS2010 Professional RC and on my first attempt to install it, I get the same message.

There is no 'insert your serial number' field, nowhere to do it and still, it won't let me install due to invalid serial number...

Any solutions for this yet?

Hello Alex.

I solved it downloading from my MSDN account Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate (instead of Beta 2 version) and it works fine without specifying any serial number.
