At our company, most users have Visual Studio 2008 installed now. We started installing VS 2010 recently. Most users have the Windows Shell Extension enabled in their 2008 Power Tools already. When they install the 2010 Power Tools, they
see this error message:
The TFS Backup Plan feature requires the TFS Application Tier to be installed. In order to continue, you must install TFS on this machine, or deselct the TFS Backup Plan feature.
After some experimenting, I have confirmed that once we remove the Windows Shell Extension feature from the installed TFS 2008 Power Tools, the 2010 Power Tools installs fine with no errors.
I understand that a system can have this feature active in only one of the Power Tools installed, not both. I think that I've seen the correct error message for this scenario the past. But many of my co-workers recently started installing the latest
2010 Power Tools - December 2011, and now we see this incorrect error message. It's caused us some confusion. I hope that Microsoft can fix this error message in the next version.
Also, I copied the error message above exactly, including a misspelling: "deselct" should be "deselect".
I hope this information helps others until the install error message is fixed.
Thanks for this. I just had the same problem when installing the TFS 11 Beta Power Tools when the TFS 2010 Power Tools were also installed. As you suggested, I had to uninstall the Windows Shell Extensions from my TFS 2010 Power Tools installation
before installing the TFS 11 Beta Power Tools.
