*** Confession: VSS neophyte ***
I am trying to open Visual SourceSafe from within VS 2008. I get an error "The Database S:\ABC\VSS does not exist, would you like to search for it?" When I try to search for it, the file dialog does not show any network drives. However, if I run VSS Explorer as a stand-alone, I see the database and am able to browse network drives.
Can I fix this problem?
Thansk!

Did you try the connection on the same machine? Usually the error message is caused by the lack the permission. Please check out the following article to set the permission.

Yes. I did. I am using Win 7.
Just to clarify, if I use VSS Explorer from the Start menu it works fine. However, from within VS 2008 it doesn't allow me to access network drives.

What is the "S:\" drive, do you do the mapping the matwork folder as a local driver? Could you please try to use the network path (UNC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_(computing)) such as \\ComputerNameOrIpAddress\ShareName.
On the other hand, please try to check your firewall, and try to disable it in short time to test if your VS can access the network address.
I did the same actions to find the network share folder by the UNC path, and just type my shared server machine name with the sub folder path. Then VS and VSS can find the "srcsafe.ini" file.

Tried typing in the network path, but it doesn't find it. Again, on the same machine I can run VSS Explorer from the Start menu and it works fine. From within VS2008 it doesn't.
Thanks!

Try right-click VS 2008, choose "Run as administrator" and try again to see if it makes any difference.
