Answered Data validation after migration from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010

After migrating my TFS 2008 to a new Team Project Collection in TFS 2010, is there a way to compare the two to ensure that the data is the same in both instances? How can I validate that nothing was corrupted or lost during the migration process?

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks for your post!

Before you upgrade, you should understand the releases from which you can upgrade, other requirements, and any optional features of Team Foundation Server 2010 that might require your consideration before you upgrade. Only when the requirements are meet, the update starts. You must back up your data before you start.

During the TFS 2010 update wizard, the Reporting service, database and report data account will be verified, otherwise, the update will fail. If you update to TFS 2010 strictly perform the steps in accordance with in the TFS 2010 installation guide, the data will be not corrupted or lost.

After update, you can open the team project from team project collection, open the team project portal and the reports to validate the data.

For more information, you can refer to http://rules.ssw.com.au/TFS/RulesToBetterTFS2010Migration/Pages/default.aspx

    Hope it helps!

Thanks for the replies Cathy, but it looks to me like the serverDiff tool, which is part of the TFS Integration Platform, is for doing comparisons on migrated as opposed to upgraded data. I suppose the difference here is the schema of the database. I'm trying to validate that my TFS 2008 data is completely intact after an upgrade to TFS 2010. I realize that in my initial question, I used the term "migration" instead of "upgrade", but now I'm using the terminology as it is defined by the TFS Rangers and Willy-Peter Schaub. I did find some information in one of the links from your previous post about collecting dogfooding statistics, and it appears that we can use that to at least validate the count of items between the TFS 2008 and TFS 2010 databases after the upgrade. Is there anything else that will help in the data validation without opening each team project and comparing Work Items and Version Control?

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks for your feedback!

As far as I know, there is no such tool to help in the data validation without opening ecach team project and comparig Work Items and Version Control.

Hope anyone in this forum can help you.
