Error On AdventureWorks2008R2 Download

Question

I have SQLExpress for 2008 and i'm trying to download AdventureWorks2008R2. I'm not certain if I have the advanced features or not (I'm not sure where to check for this). I did enable Filestream for file I/O) When I download this database I get an error message:

A fatal error occurred during installation. Details: Failed object initialization (ISupportInitialize.EndInit). An exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statment or batch. Error at object 'DatabaseSelection'in markup file 'DatabaseInstalleer,component/databaseselection.xaml' Line 78 Position 3.

I have no idea what to do at this point?? any and all help would be so appreciated!!

Hi Shane, can you try to download AdventureWorks for SQL Server 2008 as opposed to 2008R2 since that is the version of SQL Server you are running?

Thank you, Derrick and Sam for your help.

I've tried to download the .zip file of AdventureWorks and it downloads onto my machine but then I can't do anything with it. I'm not able to open either one of the two zipped files? Any ideas??

please provide the error message you get.

do you have a program which could extract ZIP files ?

depending on the tool and the operating system you need to unblock the files after downloading from Internet (right click on the file, properties, unblock)

Hello and thank you Daniel,

Error message that I get: First popup says: You are attempting to open a file of type 'SQL Server Database Transaction Log File'(.ldf)

These files are used by the operating system and by vatious programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system.

If you still want to open the file, click Open with. Otherwise, click Cancel.

Then I have an option to 'Open With...' Or 'Cancel'.

When I click 'Open With' I get the Window Pop up message saying Windows can't open this file:

File: AdventureWorksLT2008_Log.ldf

Then I get the option to:

Use the Web Service to find the correct program.

Or Select a program from a list of installed programs.

I do have a Zip program and to the best of my knowledge it is the one that would come with Windows 7 64 bit. I don't get an option to unzip these files though?? which puzzles me...

I don't have an option to unblock these two files from the properties window.

I'm wondering if I maybe need to find a different ZIP program??

Hi Shane, it sounds like you are able to get the .mdf and .ldf files extracted to your machine, correct?  Once you have those files, you will want to open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and attach the sample database.

Connect to your instance, right-click on Databases -> Attach.  In Databases to Attach, click Add and navigate to the .mdf file you just downloaded.  You'll then see the AdventureWorks database in your instance.
