Document link in SharePoint 2010 task alert email fails in IE8

I have a “task assigned” alert email generated from a SP 2010 Foundation site. The email contains a link to the document on which the task is assigned. The document file name contains spaces (e.g. my document.docx). When I click on the document link on a PC with IE7, the URL is encoded to replace the spaces with %20 and the document is displayed. When I click on the document link on a PC with IE8, the spaces are removed from the URL and the document is not displayed. I instead get a 404 error because the document cannot be found.
If I modify the URL directly in the browser to insert the spaces in the correct place, the document is displayed correctly.
What are the SP 2010 or IE8 settings that will enforce the URL to be encoded?

Hi,
Per my understanding, SharePoint and IE8 would still support URL encode, please refer following article for SharePoint URL definition.
URL path length restrictions: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff919562.aspx
However, it is chance that this is caused by client tool, and did you use Outlook to receive alert email?
Did the file path in original mail contain correct hyper link?
Best Regards,
Aaron

Aaron... The article you refer to addresses the length of the URL. I don't believe the length of the URL is the issue since clicking on the URL in the email works correctly in IE7.
We use Lotus Notes 8.5 as our email client. Since the URL works correctly in IE7, I don't believe the email client is the cause of the issue.
When you mouse over the file name in the SharePoint generated task alert email Lotus Notes displays the URL in the Status bar. The file name in the URL is not encoded with %20. Even though this is the case, IE7 displays the document correctly but IE8 does not. Other members of my team are also having the same issue.
I believe this is an issue with how IE8 encodes the URL and possibly the more stringent security incorporated into IE8.
Are you familiar with the SP 2010 Web Application settings? Could any of those address this issue?

17 พฤษภาคม 2554 18:30We have the same issue, although it's not across the board. Some Lotus Notes 8.5/IE8 users it works fine for, others it doesn't. sds12345- have you been able to figure anything out?

18 พฤษภาคม 2554 10:15thewire - unfortunately we've not found a solution for this issue. I've also posted this issue in Lotus Notes forums and haven't received any feedback. Please let me know if you find a solution and I'll do the same for you.

30 เมษายน 2555 18:13I am having the exact same issue with some users in our office. I cannot find a solution either and was wondering if you ever found a solution for this, since it was almost a year ago that you were having the probelm. The spaces are being stripped from the workflow email in lotus notes client 8.5.1 I have been trying to find a solution for 2 weeks now

our answer was to scrap Lotus Notes and go to Exchange :) We certainly didn't switch just because of this problem, but this is defintely no longer an issue in the Outlook client.
