I have recently chosen to use a smart card reader for my online home energy account. When I came to install it on my machine,a toshiba Satellite with Windows 7(64 bit) with I.E9,the error message "Unable to comunicate with smart card,Active X not properly installed".I phoned the support team at my energy company who went through some checks with me to sort the problem,i.e alter the Active X settings on my internet settings. This did not work. They then told me to contact my security software provider,Kaspersky as it seemed to them this was an issue for them.Kaspersky re-installed the software with the latest patches, this didn't work either. They then told me to turn off Kaspersky and try again. This didn't work AGAIN.Has anyone got any suggestions for me to sort this problem as I'm becoming very frustrated.I need this online top-up account to work as I'm disabled and find it hard to get to a shop to top up.

ask the card reader's producer to release an ActiveX that works with 64bit IE, or use 32bit IE.

I've tried using I.E 9(32 bit) and still no change.Do you think resetting I.E settings to default would help?

    Hi,

go to answers.microsoft.com and search for similar questions. I beleive there are similar questions and answers there.

From memory, I don't think "home energy account" smart reader was compatible with win7/IE9. You should run Windows Update to check for Driver updates for the smart reader device. The Action Center in Win7 documents known issues and suggested fixes for your computer... Start>Control Panel>Action Center.

Toshiba satellite.... I bought one 10 years ago now... If you upgraded from XP to windows 7 on that machine you are bound to have driver problems.

For consumer help with IE select the Help>Online Support menu and follow the prompts for your Windows and IE versions.
