    Hi,

I was using VBE2010 a few months ago when I had a problem with my computer.  I did a Restore to get my system working which has been Ok for the last three months.  I attempted to install VBE2010 again today and have hadd numerous problems. By re-installing and following on screen prompts VBE2010 appeared to have been installed but I cannot create a database.  When I click on Add Data Source I accept Database and Recordset, but when I click onto new connection I am returned to the IDE,  I do cannot reach the options  to be able to select the type of database.  Any help would greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ken,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

It seems like some components failed to install or corrupt. I recommend you uninstall Visual Basic 2010 Express via Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility: http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2010uninstall

Please run this tool as Complete mode by adding two switches in command line:

    Complete (VS2010_Uninstall-RTM.ENU.exe /full /netfx)
Removes entire set of Visual Studio 2010 and supporting products, including Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 and components shared with previous versions of Visual Studio. Note: may break features of previous versions of Visual Studio or other products taking dependency on Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.

Then reinstall Visual Basic 2010 Express again. If you encounter any problem during the installation, please collect the fresh logs for further diagnose. Download and run the Log Collection Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0da314f-6216-4a18-bc6b-7d29cf83af20&displaylang=en

Upload the vslogs.cab file located in %temp% folder to an open website like Windows Live SkyDrive or send it to me (E-mail: v-alsun_at_microsoft_dot_com).

Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Hi Ken,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

From your Email, you said you failed to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 (x64), which I think is related to your issue.

You said you cannot find vslogs.cab anywhere on your system after you ran it. Could you please run it again via administrator privileges? To do so: Right click>>Run as administrator. Then check if vslogs.cab is in %temp% folder or not.

If you can collect the logs, we can analyze this problem in detail. You can upload the vslogs.cab file to an open website like Windows Live SkyDrive or send it to me (E-mail: v-alsun_at_microsoft_dot_com).

Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Hi,

Have run Collect.exe with AdminPriv, still no vslogs.cab  which I entered in the Start 'search programs and files' can be found on my system i'm not sure what directory %Temp% is as I  only have Temp on my system as I can find.  The installation of VBE2010 reported that it could not install Microsoft SQL Server SP1 (64).  Should I attempt to download and install outside of VBE2010.

    Regards Ken

In the Temp directory there iss now 1779 files.

    Hi Ken,

You can try this to find %temp% folder: Start>>Run>>Type “%temp%”>>Find vslogs.cab.

If you want to install SQL Server 2008 Express SP1 manually, you can go to this path: %Visual Studio installation directory%\wcu\SSE. Then run the SQLExpr_x64_enu.exe to check if you can install it normally.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Alexander,

Have found vslogs in "C:\Users\Kenko\AppData\Local\Temp".  I used the search box in file display window after selecting drive C, as nothing else worked the way you advised.  I will leave Sql Server 2008 SP1 until you come back to me.  I will forward file as per your earlier directions.

    Regards  Ken

    Hi Ken,

I received your Email. I checked your logs, but there is no log about Visual Studio setup. There are some logs about Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1. If you are willing to reinstall Visual Studio 2010 and collect the fresh logs, I can analyze this problem further.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know.

    Hi Ken,

I am sorry that .NET Framework installation let you experienced such terrible period of time. Frankly speaking, sometimes setup issues are more complex than what we imagine, because of different machines, different OS settings, different software installed and so on. For you situation, although the reinstallation or repair seems like inconvenient and wasting a lot of time, compared with that endless searching and try but no avail, it is a quicker and more direct way to resolve some tough problem in fact. If you have any other concerns after the reinstall, please feel free to let me know.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
