  • If the database does not exist on the destination side and the transfer is a one time thing, I think you could just take offline (or detach) the source database, copy over the data and log files to the destination server, and attach them back.

If the database already exists you could check out Import / Export features of Management Studio. This allows you to specifiy which tables you want to copy. (Although I think this will copy over just basic schema info and data -- permissions, triggers, etc. will not be copied.)

Hope this gives you a start.

  • The Copy Database Wizard of ssms lets you move or copy databases and their objects easily from one server to another.

    steps:

    1)Open sql server management studio

    2) right click on the database you want to copy

    3)select "tasks"

4)select "copy database" which is at the last.

  • There are many ways to transfer a database but it depends on the requirements.

using detach and attach would work well if the servers are in the same domain and about the same users need access and the collation stays consistent with the tempdb etc, you could backup and restore too if you feel unconfident detaching databases.

export and import wizards can be useful if there isn't too much data and especially if you are working with different configurations, sql versions etc

transfer database wizard has some options too if you transfer a database such as if you want to transfer logins.

maybe some more explanation of the situation and the requirements would help make better suggestions.

  • Hi Srinivas,
Firstly which version on Source Server is? Which version is destination?

    I would recommend following options:
    1) Go for Backup and restore option for complete move (only possible incase destination is running on same or higher version of SQL server and having enough space to perform restore)
    2) Import/export if you want to transfer only few objects and data. (Both servers should be accessible in same window)
    3) Detach/Attach for move or copy (only possible incase destination server is running on same or higher version of SQL server and having enough space accommodate physical files)

Let us know more details and we will help you further.

  • Hello,

If you have to copy the whole database from one server to another, the best best way to do it is using backup/restore, You can accomplish this if both the source and the destination sql servers are using the same version
