I have been recommended by a Security Audit team to disable the remote access option to harden our SQL Server instances.
sp_configure 'remote access', 0
As I understance this only prevents legacy code using RPC's and as such should not break any app connectivity. Can someone pls advise if there are any drawbacks to doing this.

It should be safe to remove it if you are not using remote servers for any database activity. It only applies to Remote Server execution. Preferred way is to use linked servers, as this function has been deprecated in 2012.
