Bak from SQL Express 2008 work on SQL Server 2005??

    Question

  • I'm trying to get the most recent version of my database up to my server. Since I'm using a cheapo host the only way they offer to replace my current db with a new one is to upload a .bak file.

So far the two bak files I've provided for the techs at my host have given 'incorrectly formed' error message. I'm using SQL Express 2008 on my dev box while the host has SQL Server 2005, would this explain the error? Is there a way to get a bak from Express 2008 to work on Server 2005?

  • If you are looking to move the database from 2008 to 2005 version , the best way would be to start the scripting wizard from SSMS 2008 or database publishing wizard and script both schema and data . Create an empty database in 2005 instance and execute the script on 2005 database instance.

  • You can't restore a higher level backup on a lower level SQL Server. No way around that. You would have to go some scrpt/export/import route instead.
