SQL Server 2012 Express SSMS

    Question

  • I installed SQL Server 2012 Express version a while ago.

I just tried to run SSMS to access the server, but I got evaluation period expired.

It seems that I have evaluation version or Express version does not have SSMS.

Can you please help to install 2012 Express SSMS?

Your information and help is great appreciated,

  • Hello,

The discovery report shows you are using an expired pre-release version of SQL Server (RC0) like Samuel mentioned.  Please follow his advice and uninstall RCO, then try to install Express Edition again.

  • The RTM Express SKU does not expire, so you are either trying to connect to an Evaluation versioned instance that has expired or to a pre-release version that has now timebombed (such as SQL Server 2012 CTP3).  My suggestion would be to uninstall any expired version assuming there is nothing on the instance you need to retain.  After that, you can install SQL Server 2012 Express Management Studio if you just need the tools or Express with Tools if you need to reinstall a new Express instance along with the tools:

  • Thanks for the message,

My SQL server 2012 Express is OK, I am able to connect SQL server 2012 Express using SQL Server 2008 R2 SSMS.

It is just SQL Server 2012 SSMS. I got message right after I run the SSMS. I do not have a chance to connect SQL Server 2012 Express Server.

If this is the case, it seems that I installed pre-release version.

Can you please advise which program I need uninstall?

Will it affect other version of SQL server?

    Thanks again for helping,

  • Check your list of SQL Server components in Add/Remove Programs.  If you have an entry for SQL Server Denali CTP3, you can click on that entry and remove the management tools through the feature selection dialog.  If that doesn't work, can you run the discovery report to list out the exact components you have on the machine?  That should help clear up what needs to be removed by listing either the Eval version or pre-release version causing the problem you are seeing.

    Thanks,

  • There are I use Windows Add/Remove Program

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB RC0

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client RC0

    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 RC0(64-bit)

    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 RC0 Setup(English)

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Compiler Service RC0

    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptsDom RC0

Do I need uninstall all of them?

The discovery report shows that I have version 11.0.1750.32

for Database Engine Service, SQL Server Replication, Management Tools - Basic and LocalDB.

Should I just use Windows Add/Remove program to remove all SQL Server 2012 program and re install from installer?

    Thanks again for helping,
