SQL 2008 server agent

    Question

  • Hi all got a problem with installation of sql 2008. I can seem to start my server agent in order to perform scheduled backups.

I'm running xp pro sp3 with sql 2008. Is xp pro able to run server agent? Or do i need to be running windows server?

    regards

  • XP OS is not an issue for starting SQL agent.

Please post the error that you had when you tried to start the Agent and also let us know what version of SQL 2008 you installed.

    Thanks, Leks

  • Yes, xp pro can run sql server agent, so it's an installation issue. What edition of SQL Server are you installing? Be more specific about the error.

  • Could you please provide the following:
    1. Select @@version output
    2. Any errors while trying to start SQL Agent
    3. Errors from the Windows Event Logs during the time of Agent service startup
    4. Any errors in the SQLAgent.OUT in the SQL Server LOG folder

  • Varsham,
Had a look at the post. Tried to change the registry entry to add the sql server name to the registry. No luck. Replaced the name with the ip address no luck and also checked to make sure tcp/ip was enabled in the protocols section of the netweork config area of thesql config manager (Which it already was). Still no luck.

When i try to start the server agent from the management studio this is the error i get:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.

    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

None of this makes any sense to me at all.

    HELPPPPPPP!!!!

Is it possible that my installation is corrupt? Its been installed for about 7 months now and I've never hade server agent running.

    regards

  • That's possible. Unfortunately I never faced a similar issue myself so let's see what others are suggesting...

  • Hi Joe,

Some authentication problem is the cause i believe. Can you let me know under what service account is your SQL agent is in ? Try changing to other accounts and see if the same thing happens and try changing the service account from SQl server configuration manager.

    Thanks, Leks

  • Also, could you check the SQL Server Errorlogs and find out if there are any error messages reported for the SQL Agent Service Account. The error number you would be interested in would be 18456 which is a Login Failed.

  • Thanks for all your input. Tried all your suggestions and all to no avail so i manually backed up and decided to reinstall. Just finished about an hour ago. Server Agent now starts automatically. The version for SQL server 2008 I'm running is the workgroup edition. This is the version thatr was shipped with the software that it is the backend for. Goldmine Premium edition (CRM). Does the version of SQL support scheduled backups and data maintenance??

The problem I now face is that I'm trying to ititiate scheduled tasks e.g backup and data maintenance and am getting errors.
    Below is the latest error.

This error refers to Integration Services. Tried to look for this feature in the setup area and it doesn't give me the opion to install it? Any ideas?

  • As far as I know you cannot have SSIS installed with workgroup edition , if you want to create SSIS packages using any data transformations you need to get SQL standard edition or higher for your prod environment.
If you are only looking for backups , just schedule it through a job without going for a SSIS package.

    Thanks, Leks

  • Integration Services has limited functionality in Workgroup edition. Please refer below for more details:
