Database project and Database model not in Entity Data Model Wizard - SSDT

    Question

  • Greetings,

I have installed SSDT and SQL Server Denali CTP3. I started a new project exactly the same with sample from MIX11 - DAT314 video. When I add a new model (ADO.NET Entity Data Model), I have only two model: "Generate from database" and "Empty model" only. I do not have "Database project" and "Database Model".

I have tried to using SSDT on SQL Database project, I can create a table from "Solution Explorer", and it works fine.

I do not know why I do not have  "Database project" and "Database Model" on "Entity Data Model Wizard".

    Any helps are welcome.

  • Hi,

Unfortunately, the EF integration with SSDT database projects has been removed from VS11 Beta. Without going into detail, we apologize for pulling this functionality out at that point, and we hope to release it (and in a better way) in the future.

  • Hi,

There is no patch yet for Entity Framework. Now I am using SSDT starting a database project from the existing database. Using design, or script command. It's ok and help to syncronize among Database project, empty database, and sample database.

That is what I am doing so far and I am going to keep that way on my project.

    Have fun,

  • Sorry about the miscommunication. We're working to release this as soon as possible. If you're really in a bind and need to synchronize database projects with entity framework models, take a look at the Entity Designer Database Generation Power Pack. This allows you to drive the database project from an entity data model, with a point-in-time 'Generate Database from Model' capability. Since this released before Juneau, it only works with TSData (non-Juneau/SSDT) database projects.

Here's a post which explains a bit more with a walkthrough.

If you're hitting issues with the Juneau installation, could you please send us your setup logs by following the short procedure below? You can send the resulting vslogs.cab file to [my first name] (dot) [my last name] at microsoft dot com

  • AshCR - this isn't in CTP4 either. The Entity Framework integration will arrive soon with the next release of Visual Studio (Visual Studio 11), so it won't appear in any updates for SSDT over Visual Studio 2010. If you're interested in trying it out, an alpha version is in Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview:  http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27543. There's some MSDN documentation here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh344284(v=vs.110).aspx.

  • Hi All,

I have tried my Database project run on Visual Studio 11 Beta, at the beginning it frustrated me. But after checked the database project properties, it works fine.

The following step to make it work on my current database project and also tried on a new project, open database project properties:

    1. At the "Project Settings" tab, check "Create script (.sql file)"
    2. At the "Debug" tab, click edit button at "Target Connection String" and set your database follow the Sql connection setting
    3. Run the project
    4. Publish the project
    5. Try schema compare to existing database

Note: On a new Database project, not success to create a new SChema

    Hope this can help

  • Hi Jannen,

Wish I would have seen this before downloading the CTP3.  It was one of the primary reasons for downloading and installing the CTP.

So after downloading the CTP3 the Service Pack installing both which took some 4 hours - I now find myself without a working SQL server instance and still no entity framework link.  Quite disappointing, anyhow, is there a patch coming up to address this? It seems a little difficult to give feedback on functionality that does not work as demonstrated!

    Thanks very much

  • Hi Adi,

Is the entity framework functionality now available in CPT 4? Or are we still hacking about with TSData etc?

    Many thanks,

  • Hi Adi,

Unfortunately, the installer for VS 11 failed at the last step.  The error message was:

Package Name: "Microsoft SQL Server "Denali" Community Technology Preview 3 Express Edition

Error Description: Fatal error during installation

What do you recommend I do in terms of next steps?

    Thanks again,

  • Are you installing VS11 Preview on a machine which has SSDT CTP4 installed? VS11 Preview is based on SQL Server 2012 (Denali) CTP3 and SSDT CTP4 is based on SQL Server 2012 RC0 which cannot exist side-by-side. When RTMd they will but the preview do not co-exist

  • I have used Visual Studio 11 Preview for a couple of months and my project used a edmx data model connected to a database project. I uninstalled the preview and installed Visual Studio 11 Beta, and now that project is no longer working. Also, in the Entity Data Model wizard, I can no longer select "Database Project" as a source for a new edmx database. I am now installing SQL Server 2012 Express RC0 to see if that helps.

  • Thanks for your quick reply. I agree that the feature was not error-free, but after some setup troubles it was working quite well for me. I hope to see it back in the RTM version of Visual Studio 11. I would have appreciated it if the error in Visual Studio was more descriptive and had told me that this feature has been removed. Is there a full list available somewhere with feature that have been removed from Visual Studio 11 Beta compared to the Developer Preview?

  • Sad panda.

I too, have been checking underneath the sofa, the rug on the floor and in every drawer to find out where it disappeared off to, after I installed the Beta.

I liked it and was using it quite a lot in Developer Preview. I didn't really run into any major issues with it, so I'm quite curious to know the details around why it was pulled from Beta.

Oh, and I'd like it back, please. Real soon like :-)

There's a cookie in it for you if you harass the team to hurry up!

PS: I assume the SSDT blog is the place to watch for any news on this? http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ssdt/
