What is a "Fault Bucket" error?

    Question

  • When I open my Computer Management Console and look at Event Viewer/Application, I see an error:

    Fault bucket 277816039.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    Data:
    0000: 42 75 63 6b 65 74 3a 20   Bucket:
    0008: 32 37 37 38 31 36 30 33   27781603
    0010: 39 0d 0a                  9..

What is this error and how can I fix it?

Also, When I click on the link to get more information all I get is a page that says there is no information on this error.  This happens with ALL my errors! I have never seen any usefull information from this link.

I am running on a Windows 2004 Standard Server with SQL Server 2005.

  • You probably meant Windows 2003 Standard Server?

To investigate whether these failures check if you see any other entries in the event log. The event you have provided is generated by Watson error reporting framework, but there should be an event log entry just before that which describes what application failed and at what address. Could you provide more complete list?

  • I am getting the below error

    Fault bucket 394021878.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

We are using the QTP (Quick Test Pro Mercury) to automate our testing. This application uses lot of memory and fail to release the memory and gets hunged. The message in the even viewer is

Hanging application QTPro.exe, version 9.2.4351.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Can you please let me know how we can handle this scenario?

    Regards,

  • Fault bucket errors can be caused by many things.  Sometimes it is a program that is using memory improperly.  Also, it can be a hardware issue with the RAM itself.
You can Google RAM TEST and find programs that will test your RAM.  MS makes one that you make a boot disk and run it.
Also, it never hurts to open your computer and make sure the RAM is seated properly.  The last time I saw many random bucket errors it turned out to be 2 of 3 RAM sticks weren't properly seated.
