SQL 2008 install failed - Could not find the Database Engine startup handle.

    Question

  • I just tried to install SQL 2008  on my home computer (Vista) and it failed.  I installed it on my work PC (Window XP) on friday and it worked just fine.

The error message does not help at all, and a google search is not picking up anything useful either.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi:

If you want to install 2005 & 2008 on vista OS,you must setup SP2 of vista, but i found the package of vista from

your setup errorlog is only SP1,so it failed.

  • Which edition of sql server 2008 is this. You may check the system requierment here

  • All window updates on my PC are completly up to date.  I also installed 3.5 SP1.

All system requirements are met, and during install the verification passed for everything.

  • are there any restrictions to what version of Vista SQL2008 can be installed on?  I believe I have Home Premium.

  • Anyone figure this out yet.  I am having the same problem.

    Wednesday, September 24, 2008 5:19 PM
  • It appears that the SQL version I was trying to install is not supported on vista Home Premuim.

Although if this is the case, this is VERY poor design on Microsoft's part!

The install goes through a huge verification process before it starts installing and it never failed a single verifiaction step, instead of throws a cryptic error during the actual install process.

I may upgrade to Vista Ultimate and hopefully that will resolve the problems, but my company only provides Vista Business and I don't want to convert my Home Premuim to Business.  So I'll have to dish out the cash for the upgrade.

I'll sent a update it it works with Vista Ultimate

  • Yes, I'm seeing this error as well, but I'm running Windows Server 2008 Datacenter edition (SP1).   I'm installing Developer Edition.    Surely this is a supported configuration, right?

I'm not a SQL specialist, but I'll dig into it and see if I can find out what's happening.

  • OK, I've made some progress on this.   It appears to be a permissions issue, with the accounts I used not having the right permissions to complete setup.   I managed to work around the problem with the following steps:

    1)  Remove all SQL components using the control panel.
    2)  Reboot the machine to ensure that service deletion completes.
    3)  Reinstall using default directory settings, and the (all services use one account) option.

In my previous install I had Specified separate disks for DB files, Log files and backup files.   This time I didn't do that (it can be done later.)   I had also chosen separate domain accounts for each of the services to run under, this time I chose just one. (But not network service.)

    Hope that helps

It is supported on Home Premium.  See the following BOL Entry:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

All supported OS configurations are listed by Edition and hardware architecture on the above link.

I would suspect that you don't have the correct ACL's in the file system configured for the account installing SQL Server or the Service account you are installing SQL to use.

  • Hi,

I would also try using a different SQL media and try installing, because this issue can also be as the media was corrupted.

To nail the issue you can try downlaoding the evaluation version from the internet and try the installing that if that is successful, that would mean the issue is with the media.

  • I have the same issue. I'm installing SQL Server 2008 R2 on a fully patched Server 2008. The OS is a new install. I installed the client tools without any issues. When I go to install the SQL Server Engine it fails.

I've tried several different installation media, even exploding the ISO and installing from that all with the same result.

Is there anything else I should try?

  • It seems this was the problem:

    http://www.msbicentral.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/88/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/80/FLASH-SQL-Server-2008-R2-Error-Could-Not-Find-Database-Engine-Startup-Handle.aspx

I had to unpack the ISO to the local file system and install from there. I unpacked the ISO using 7-Zip. Clearly there is something wrong with the ISO and the way Virtual PC mounts it.

  • My personal experience suggests(faced this error two times, 2K5 and 2K8 both), this occurs due to conflict with previous installations of sql.
