Error when installing SQL 2008 in Win 7 x64

    Question

  • I have a crazy problem when I try to install SQL Server 2008 on my new laptop. The OS is Win 7 x64.

It started whenever coming to the part "SQLEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_CPu64"; and I received the error:

Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed

I already tried both solutions: Installing SQL before doing with VS; and installing after setting up VS (of course, include upgrading to SP1)

I already had a look to the permission of Microsoft folder in AppData\Roaming. It is full controlled.

Please somebody help me to find out this maze. I really really appreciate.

  • Hi sedokatoji,

According to the error message "Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed", this issue is probably caused by that the account installing SQL Server 2008 did not have permission to the drive that contained temporary data.

From your describe, we can know that you had full controlled permission of Microsoft file in AppData\Roaming, but did you install SQL Server 2008 using a domain account or using a local account? Did you have permission to the DRIVE that contained temporary data? Please give a check at your convenience.

If you do have permission to the drive, as another work around, could you please kindly try to install using local account to see if the installation will success?

To further investigation, please collect the error messages logged into the setup log files which are located in the %Program files%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup bootstrap\Log\ folder.

  • Yup. In fact, I installed the new SQL 2008 instead of upgrading it. Is it wrong?

However, I already tried it. The only thing I'm not so sure is <sys-admin> in the command:

                  sqlcmd -E -A -Q"alter login <var><sys-admin></var> with name = sa"

Does it write exactly like that?

  • Try

    sqlcmd -E -A -Q"alter login [sys-admin] with name = sa"

    Wednesday, August 18, 2010 7:10 PM
  • A message occurs like this:

         "Meg 15151", level 16, state 1, server -------, line 1

Cannot alter the login 'sys-admin', because it does not exist or do you not have permission."

  • Guess that this solution is not suitable for me. The Features include Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication, Full-text Search, Reporting Services are still failed.

  • I got the same problem. This is not the expert comment but I restored my PC to factory image and I am able to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition. My best guess is I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer edition before, Unistalling SQL Server 2005 does not delete all the files or It made some regestry changes, one of the option blocks SQL Server 2008 R2 instalation but it works for me now.

    Any comments will be appriciated.
