Upgrade Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 for SQL server 2008 R2 SP1

    Question

  • To all,

    I have a server (Windows 2003 Server Std R2 SP2, 32bit) running SQL Server 2008 R2 ( persumably 32 bits also).

I need to upgrade the Windows 2003 in the server , to Windows 2008 Std R2 64bit.

    a) I am not sure if this will impact SQL 2008 R2 , as it was installed as 32bits. Is there any guides/webpage on this upgrade issue?

    b) Any upgrade tools to check SQL Server upgrade to Windows 2008 ?

    Please feedback.

    Thank you.

You can install SQL Server 2008 R2 (32 bits) on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit x64 Standard.More information about Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008 R2:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx#DC32

    >> b) Any upgrade tools to check SQL Server upgrade to Windows 2008?

Do you want to find any tool to check the environment of SQL Server which has been upgraded to Windows 2008? It seems there is no such a tool.  You can determine the environment of SQL Server based on your current operation system.

  • There is no upgrade path between ANY Microsoft 32 bit OS and ANY Microsoft 64 bit OS.  You would need to reformat and reload the OS partition in order to run a 64-bit OS.
