  • Hi Nitin,

As you have posted, the version 10.50.2500.0 is the instance with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. It is not a SQL Server 2008 instance, and already and Service Pack 1 applied. Please have a look at the versions of SQL Server builds on this site: http://www.sqlsecurity.com/FAQs/SQLServerVersionDatabase/tabid/63/Default.aspx.

In your scenario, you can install the Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1.

  • Hello,

Please take in consideration SQL Server 2008 SP3 cannot be applied on a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance. SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 are two different realeases of SQL Server, and updates for one of them do not apply to the other.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello,

The SQL Server Management Studio installed on the computer is from SQL Server 2008 R2. Could you please confirm you are not trying to install SQL Server 2008 SP3 on a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance.
The latest service pack for SQL Server 2008 R2 is SP1.

Please provide the output of the following T-SQL command:

    SELECT @@version

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Nitin,

You may have a try to copy the existing file c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\devenv.exe.config file to another copy called devenv.exe.config.tmp then re-install the service pack 3.

If you have installed update Hotfix 942288, please remove it  and try to re-install the service pack 3.

If it not works, please repair the SQL Server 2008 instance, reboot and re-install.

For more information, please have a look at the some error with Service Pack 1:
Failure to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369) - Error Code 84B30001

  • Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for your reply. I went through the above steps:

    1. I could not locate devenv.exe.config file at the given location.

    2. Hotfix 942288 is not installed on the machine.

    3. I tried repairing as well but still I am getting the same error.

Also, let me highlight that SP1 is successfully installed on this machine.

    SO I am still stuck!

    Thank you.

    Regards, Nitin.

  • Hi Stephanie,

I downloaded the SP3 and thanks to your advise, I could see the error being displayed as: "There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer."

    The "SELECT @@VERSION" query still returns "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP1) - 10.50.2500.0"

In the "Select Features" step of the setup wizard I can only see "Shared Features" Tree, which is unselected and disabled and then clicking on "Next" button displays the error message above. After this I cannot proceed.

    Please advise...

    Thank you.

    Regards, Nitin.

  • Hi Nitin,

The message on the Descritpion indicates that  you cannot install Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 to a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 instance. You can compare the versions with the link above to find out the patch levels.

  • I know this is an old post, but I just recently ran into this problem as well. The issue was that only certain features were installed that had to be upgraded. I found this by going to SQL Server Installation Center under Configuration Tools. Then from there I selected Tools and ran the Installed SQL Server features discovery report. I found that I only had integration services installed.   My resolution involved running the downloaded SP3 executable, making a copy of the folder that was created when it extracted then closing the GUI. In that folder I went to x64(or what version you are running)-->setup and running only the applicable file, which in this case was sql_is. It installed without a hitch. Checked the installed updates history in Windows Update and there it was. May not be applicable, but hopefully it will get the brain working. :)
