The Messenger service has not been started

    Question

  • When restarting the SQL Server agent (SQL 2008 R2 on Windows 2008 R2). I'm gettings the following error

[364] The Messenger service has not been started - NetSend notifications will not be sent.

If the message service is not longer available on Windows 2008 ? Why is SQL 2008 R2 bugging me with this error ?

    Any ideas ?

  • I think it's a bit of a red herring. It still supports the service as some companies still use net send, and run on server 2003 etc. So while it gives the error, it doesn't cause any trouble, will probably be fixed in a patch release at some stage. Right now it doesn't seem to care what OS it's on with regards to that functionality. I get the error too and it causes no issues on alerting.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Hmm, I heard it was discontinued but do you see that service? If you do can you disable it?
