  • The automatic install of the SQL2005 SP4 may fail if the SQL instance, database, tables are locked or in use.
After the first "install-trial" the following registry key is set:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\Setup]
    "Resume"=dword:00000001

Where X is the SQL instance number (1, 2, or so)

This key makes the installer "to remember" about the previous install attempts, so all further attempts are marked to be failed...

Set this key to "Resume"=dword:00000000 and download the appropriate patch files:

To obtain SQL Server 2005 SP4, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204632

To obtain SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204633

Start the upgrade manualy and follow the setup's messages.

This worked for me on all my servers.

  • The installation is failing because of lack permissions on the Registry as evident from the below entries.

Registry: Opened registry key "System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager"

Registry: Cannot open registry key "Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer"

Make sure the account with which you are trying to install the hotfix has sufficient privileges on the system. Can you please try running the Installer "As Administrator" ?

  • In that file look for any error related to .msi/.msp files since the Summary files has "Error Description         : Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file" in it.

Also you may upload the file "SQL9Express_Hotfix_KB2463332_SQLEXPR.EXE" and quote the download link here.

  • The installation is failing because of lack permissions on the Registry as evident from the below entries.

Registry: Opened registry key "System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager"

Registry: Cannot open registry key "Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer"

Make sure the account with which you are trying to install the hotfix has sufficient privileges on the system. Can you please try running the Installer "As Administrator" ?

Regedit tells me that there is NO \Installer key under Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. Lots of others, but no Intstaller key...

    Now what ?

  • The automatic install of the SQL2005 SP4 may fail if the SQL instance, database, tables are locked or in use.
After the first "install-trial" the following registry key is set:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\Setup]
    "Resume"=dword:00000001

  • @fsecor,

Please check if the Windows Installer service is started. Also check if manually creating the keys for the Installer in Registry helps.

Thank You Para Normal!  If memory serves me, a similar issue occurred with a previous SQL update and the fix was the same. Again, thank you for remembering or developing the correct, simple solution!

It is so tiresome to the read the gibberish from these MS potentates who are nothing more than the 'Blind leading the Blind' while humming the Scarecrow's refrain from the "The Wizard of Oz": "...if I only had a brain..."

    Again, thank you Para Normal!

  • I had a same problem SQL Server 2005 Express service pack 4 installation failed. This is how I managed to fix problem.

    * Download standalone installation package Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4, two files SQLEXPR.EXE and SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=26435597-b28e-4568-9d16-017bdf47abdc&displaylang=en

    * Run SQL Server Configuration Tool and make sure you have enabled "Named Pipes" protocol for SQLExpress server network.

    * Start SQLServer services (server and server browser), run sqlexpr.exe and sqlexpr_toolkit.exe setup files

So my key trick was to enable named pipes, for some reason it was disabled.

  • Have same problem trying fixes, but I have no idea why I have or need an SQL Server to start with and have no clue what IIS is and I doubt I need to...

Install log shows about 20 successful installs of kb2463332 - but almost every time I shutdown it says installing 1 of 1 but no clue what and I don't do automatic installs just notification.

Running as administrator. Only clue I find is a log entry:

Single user no databases do use latest Word no network other than home with laptop on it.  Is word or some common program requiring SQL?

I have it on various websites but have no clue why I need on computer but maybe I do but thought I'd ask before uninstall.

Have SQL server 2005, Compact 3.5 ENU, Native Client, Setup Support files, and VSS Writer as installed programs on Win 7 64 bit.  I don't "develop" anything at least that I know of :(

I also have 11 Visual C programs, 2005, 2008, Redistributable etc. I have no clue what I use it for, but again I have hundreds of programs so hesitant to just delete all.

Did a fresh install Win 7 64 bit Ultimate about a year ago, running dual boot with old XP for awhile prior to that have had just about every win system since switched from OS/2 Warp decades ago... but obviously on different computers !

  • I had the same problem with sql server express sp4 failing with the log reporting "Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file"

I resolved the problem using: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925976
i.e. Updating the SID in the registry for the SQLGroup key for the sql instance resolved the problem and the SP installed successfully.

In this case the key was:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup]
    "SQLGroup"="

In this case sysprep was run after SQL was installed so the SID changed and this was causing the install to fail.

I got the correct sid by downloading pstools psgetsid and running the following command:

You can get the correct group name to use by checking computer managment

    PsTools>psgetsid \\computername SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SQLEXPRESS$SQLEXPRESS

  • I had to track down missing .msi files. I looked through the log files to see what .msi files were not in the correct place. I put them all back in the c:\windows\installer directory and the SQL Server 2005 Express install worked from the download location that Para Normal posted above.

The tools needed to be updated as well and the log files were not as helpful. I used the script "FindSQLInstallsOnly.vbs" script from the site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2015100

I only used to to see what other .msi files were misplaced and put them back in the installer directory.

    I hope this helps someone!

  • I was able to resolve the issue on Windows 2003 by changing the 'resume' entry referenced above to a '0'.    One of the logs mentioned single user mode, not sure if that had anything to do with it.   Since the key apparently is set if a table was in use, I shutdown SQLExpress before applying the update.   (just to play it safe)

  • There are thousand of web forums and blogs that say that

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332)

    will not install.
