Can't see Registered Servers Window

    Question

  • Hi folks,

I've seen a similar post, but the resolution seemed to be 'follow the instructions'.  I have.  In SSMS, click on 'View', click on 'Registered Servers' and nothing happens.  No window or tab appears, either empty or populated.

I could really use some help here - using this feature should save me lots of deployment time.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Ron

  • Hi Folks

    EUREKA!

Went to Windows, which had 'docable' checked.  Checked 'Floating' and the Registered Servers window appeared on my second monitor, completely disassociated with the main window!

I reckon the problem all along was, as usual 'the user'.

Many thanks for your time, though - I've learned some things which I'm sure will come useful on another occassion!

    Kindest Regards,

    Ron

  • Try CTRL +  ALT + G as Uri suggested

    else

In SSMS Windows Menu -->click Reset Window Layout if it still does not work you may want to reinstall only SSMS (client tools only by rerunning setup)

  • Hi Folks,

On SQL 2008 Dev sp2.  Tried both the GUI and CTRL+ALT+G.  If I do either, focus goes away from the Object Explorer,  but that's it.  No new menu on either side or bottom of screen.

    Many thanks,

    Ron

  • Hi Folks,

Please forgive my fumbling about - I'm new to forums in general.  Just realized I forgot to mention I saw in another notice that the file C:\Documents and Settings\<myuser>\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\RegSrvr.xml could be the problem.  (Yep, also forgot running XP Pro with latest service packs) so I renamed it and restarted SSMS.  It created a new xml, but still get the same results.

  • Did you tried resetting windows layout in management studio

In SSMS Windows Menu -->click Reset Window Layout

if it still does not work you may want to reinstall only SSMS management studio (client tools only by running setup again). This won't break any of the existing databases etc. as you are only installing client application like SSMS and not the actual database engine.

  • Sorry, here I go again with stuff i should have said in the first place!

I completely uninstalled/reinstalled SQL (overkill, or what?) to no result.

Now, let me try to put down everything I've tried!  I think the only thing I'm missing now is that I'm running an ATI 5570 1GB graphics card, the drivers for which have caused me trouble with other things.  Uploaded/applied the latest drivers, tried resizing the screen, still no joy.

Tried this on the machine next to me, logged on to the domain as me, and it works.

Does this point to some kind of registry setting, perhaps?  (Just guessing, the registry is kinda like Narnia to me!

    Many thanks, once again,

    Kindest Regards,

    Ron

  • Hiya,

Don't have time to say for sure as we're about to do a live release which will tie me up the rest of the day.  However, yes, I did find that link, but, in a user-like way, didn't follow the links in it!  Just had a quick look, and i'll follow the instructions on cleaning up first thing tomorrow and let you know.

    Many thanks, once again!

    Kindest Regards,

    Ron

  • Hi Folks,

Tried running msiinv, piping to text file, ran smartmsizap against everything that said SQL 2005 (there was nothing for SQL 2008 R2).

    No Joy.

Tried running regedit and getting rid of anything not obviously SQL 2008 - still no joy.

    Kindest Regards,

    Ron
