How do I enable ALTER TABLE in SQL Server 8 R2

    Question

  • When in the SSMS, I cannot choose the ALTER script option. It is grayed out.

When I try to modify the table directly by entering a new column, I receive a message that says I have either locked the table or I need to drop it and recreate. That's not an option.

I created the database from scratch

I'm guessing that the database is somehow locked but I don't know what I did to lock it and can't discover how to unlock it.

    Thanks.

To work around this problem, use SQL statements to make the changes to the metadata structure of a table
