Access Denied error when installing SQL 2008 R2 SP2

    Question

  • Trying to install SQL 2008 R2 SP2, getting error "Configuration action failed for feature SQL_Engine_Core_Inst during timing ConfigRC and scenario ConfigRC. System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Access is denied". The admin account does have all 3 permissions  "Backup files and directories", "Debug Programs" and "Backup files and directories" set. Not sure what else permission I can open up,  any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • I finally solved my installation problem after reading a post that got the same error:

    http://mvsellers.blogspot.com/2012/06/sql-server-2008-setup-access-is-denied.html

I download and ran MS Process Monitor tool (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) while the setup was running, figured out what files and registries being "denied" access, once the required permissions are opened, installation completed successfully.

Just thought to share this with everyone in case someone is having the same struggle as I did.

  • Thank you ALberto, I tried above suggestions, still getting the same error "Access is denied". However in "SQL_engine_core_inst_Cpu64_1.txt" file, I noticed something:

    MSI (s) (A8:7C) [08:20:33:187]: Note: 1: 1402 2: UNKNOWN\URL 3: 2

Where do I get the missing file? is it supposed to be in the SP2 package?

    thanks,

    Grace
